Riley’s First Date? Kyle MacLachlan & Kaitlyn Dias

Riley’s First Date? Interview with Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias

This first-hand Riley’s First Date? interview with Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias goes behind the scenes of the Pixar short to talk about voice acting, Riley growing up, parenting, music, and the emotions that make Inside Out so relatable.

I watched the short in San Francisco and sat down with the actors who voice Riley and her dad for a conversation that was funny, thoughtful, and wonderfully honest about what happens when children start growing up.

Riley’s First Date? Interview with Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias

Riley’s First Date? picks up with Riley at age 12, when a boy named Jordan arrives at the Andersen family’s front door and Riley’s parents immediately wonder the same thing parents everywhere would wonder: Is this a date?

Inside Mom’s head, the emotions are trying to play it cool. Inside Dad’s head, they are most definitely not playing it cool.

That familiar parent-child moment gives the Pixar short its humor, but it also gives it heart. Riley is growing up. Her parents know it. Riley knows it. And all those emotions we met in Inside Out are trying to figure out what comes next.

That is what made sitting down with Kyle MacLachlan, the voice of Riley’s dad, and Kaitlyn Dias, the voice of Riley, such a treat. We talked about how they found their characters, what voice acting is really like, the music that helps drive the short, and which Inside Out emotions they recognize in themselves.

This was not a red-carpet sound bite or a collection of secondhand quotes. I was there, sitting with the actors and listening to them talk about the characters they helped bring to life.

Why Pixar Fans Still Love Riley’s First Date?

The setup is simple enough to make every parent laugh: a boy shows up at the door, Riley’s parents assume the worst, and suddenly everyone’s emotions are on high alert.

Bill Andersen, voiced by Kyle MacLachlan, goes straight into protective-dad mode. Jill Andersen tries a different approach, attempting to stay calm and connect with Riley. Riley, meanwhile, is dealing with the embarrassment of having parents who are being painfully, unmistakably parental.

It works because the short understands that growing up is emotional for everyone.

For kids, it is about wanting independence.

For parents, it is the uncomfortable realization that the little person who once needed you for everything is becoming someone with a life, friendships, and experiences of their own.

And because this is Pixar, all of that emotion arrives wrapped in laughter.

Watching Riley’s First Date? in San Francisco

I was in San Francisco for an Inside Out press event when I had the chance to watch Riley’s First Date? and later interview Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias.

Our conversations took place at the historic Fairmont Hotel, where the grand setting made the afternoon feel a little surreal. One minute I was looking out at San Francisco; the next I was talking with the voices behind Riley and her dad about Pixar, parenting, music, and what it feels like to bring an animated character to life.

The historic Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco was the setting for my conversation with Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias.

There are interviews you remember because of a polished answer or a funny sound bite. I remember this one because both actors seemed genuinely connected to the emotional world of Inside Out.

Kaitlyn Dias on Becoming the Voice of Riley

Kaitlyn Dias was only 11 when she first became part of the Inside Out world.

Her path to voicing Riley was especially interesting because she did not begin with the expectation that she would become the final voice of the character. She started as a scratch voice, helping filmmakers work through scenes while the movie was still taking shape.

Then she was officially cast as Riley.

“It really blew my mind.”

That sense of wonder came through when she talked about the experience.

Voice acting may look simple from the outside. There is no costume, no movie set, and no camera following every expression. But the actor still has to make the audience believe every emotion through voice alone.

For a character like Riley, that matters. She is funny, embarrassed, homesick, angry, loving, uncertain, and growing up, sometimes all within the same story.

Kaitlyn’s performance helped make those feelings sound natural rather than performed.

Kyle MacLachlan on Bringing Riley’s Dad to Life

Kyle MacLachlan brought something wonderfully familiar to Riley’s dad: the calm, slightly bewildered energy of a parent who loves his child deeply and is trying to keep up with how quickly she is changing.

When we talked about his approach to Bill Andersen, Kyle explained that he drew from his own experience as a father.

“I just brought in how I relate to my son.”

At the time of our interview, he talked about the patience and connection he knew from his own family life and how that helped shape the character.

That personal connection makes sense when you watch Riley’s dad. Bill can be protective and panicked, but he is never simply a caricature of an overbearing father. Beneath the comedy is a parent trying to understand a new stage in his child’s life.

And then, of course, there is the music.

Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias shared how their own personalities and experiences helped shape Riley and her dad.

Why Is AC/DC in Riley’s First Date?

One of the funniest surprises in Riley’s First Date? is the role music plays in the story.

What begins as an awkward meeting between Riley’s protective dad and Jordan takes a turn when music gives them common ground.

The AC/DC connection is more than a background joke. It becomes a bridge between generations and allows Riley’s dad to see something familiar in the boy standing at his door.

During our conversation, Kyle talked about his own love of music from the 1970s. He enjoyed AC/DC, but his heart, he told us, really belonged to Led Zeppelin.

It was one of those wonderfully human details that made the interview feel less like talking about an animated character and more like talking about the real experiences actors bring into a role.

Perfect with: A family movie night, especially when your own children are reaching that age when parents suddenly become embarrassing, friends become very important, and growing up seems to happen overnight.

Which Inside Out Emotion Do Kyle MacLachlan and Kaitlyn Dias Relate To?

Of course, when you are sitting with two people from Inside Out, you have to ask the question: Which emotion do you relate to most?

Kaitlyn did not hesitate.

Her choice was Anger, partly because she loved his wonderfully over-the-top reactions.

Anger “explodes and you can make s’mores off of him!”

It was exactly the kind of answer that made everyone laugh.

Kyle chose Joy. He explained that he often found himself in a “joy mode,” which somehow felt right for the warm, playful energy he brought into the room.

The answers were funny, but they also echoed one of the reasons Inside Out connected with so many families: most of us recognize a little of ourselves in every emotion.

The Deeper Parenting Message Behind Inside Out

The longer we talked, the more the conversation moved beyond animation.

Inside Out understands something parents know all too well: loving a child also means accepting that growing up will include difficult moments.

There will be sadness.

There will be frustration.

There will be doors that close, conversations that become awkward, and moments when parents realize they cannot solve everything.

Kyle’s thoughts on family captured that beautifully:

“The thing that’s going to make it easier is just to have the fun—to be present as a family.”

That stayed with me.

Maybe that is the real heart of Riley’s First Date?. Parents cannot stop their children from growing up, but they can still laugh with them, listen to them, and be present for the strange, funny, emotional ride.

Why This Interview Matters More Than a Movie Promotion

Years later, what I value most about this experience is not an old release date or a home-entertainment promotion.

It is the conversation.

I had the opportunity to sit across from the people who gave Riley and her dad their voices and ask them how those characters came to life.

Kaitlyn talked about unexpectedly growing from a scratch voice into the lead role.

Kyle talked about bringing his own experience as a father to Bill Andersen.

They talked about music, favorite emotions, family, and the surprisingly complicated feelings that come with growing up.

That is the part worth preserving.
