We all love heroes. Check your Facebook feed and you’ll find stories of a friend helping a friend,  strangers saving strangers and other selfless acts that save lives. Sometimes that story isn’t about human heroes, but pet heroes.  My Pet is My Hero. Studies state that pets can lower blood pressure—and sometimes a pet can even save your life.

My Friend’s Dog is My Hero

A couple of years ago, I attended my first red carpet event. It was for Million Dollar Arm. While there I met Karen from Koupon Karen. One of the things anyone would notice about Karen was how much she loves her family–especially her husband. Every breakfast I had with her, she talked about him. She also admitted she was losing sleep over their recent addition of Max, a dog. His potty training was more than she felt she had signed up for. Karen and I had the same red-eye flight out of Los Angeles and that time at the airport we were giddy girls, laughing me being the rookie at Disney’s Million Dollar Arm event. A month later, Karen shared that her husband had cancer. Ironically, it became her story of How Our Dog Max Found My Husband’s Cancer.

My Pet Is My Hero

My own experience isn’t nearly as dramatic as Karen’s. My husband is high-strung. He has a short fuse and most of the time seem to be failing at dealing with life. The kiddos and I begged him for years to let us have a dog. Finally, on February 13, 2012, Miss M and I brought home our Bailey Mae.

Bailey Mae was supposed to be MY dog. After all, my husband poked fun at me when I told him the kiddos needed a dog to tell their secrets too. His exact words were,”You talk to your dogs?”

It’s been four years in a few weeks since Bailey Mae arrived. She is my children’s first pet. She is my husband’s dog. I have watched him be so sick he couldn’t get in bed, and just lay on the floor. Bailey Mae has brought him her favorite toys and stayed by his side all day. If he stirred, she would get up and nuzzled him, lick his face, letting him know it was okay. If he raises his voice, she comes running and jumps on him until he picks her up so she can lick his face. She is my hero and his for keeping him calm, helping him pick his battles. It’s part of the reason #MyPetIsMyHero.

In the Fall, we rescued Jeb. It was a lot of work, but he loves the kiddos like no one else. He wakes them up for school and makes sure lights are off in their room when the announcement is made.
