Growing up, my home included pets. I had a dog my entire life. I learned responsibility and love–unconditional love. I wanted the same for my own children. Four years ago, we made the decision to add a dog to our family.
Day after day I searched, looking for the perfect dog. Then on December 13, 2011, we happened to see four puppies and one I immediately fell in love with–she just stood out. I loaded Miss M into the car and she and I headed to a neighborhood not too far from our own. I told her we were going to look at a puppy. Her eyes lit up.
We watched the four puppies play and interact. The one I fell in love with on the computer, she had a personality that I just adored. We walked out with a new puppy.

I remember that day. It was very cold, the sky gray like Gotham, a mist of fine rain/ice fell from the sky. Miss M wrapped the black puppy with the chocolate chip cookie colored paws puppy in her down coat, pledging to keep her warm and safe and we went home to introduce our new fur baby to her family.
My husband laughed when I shared that this puppy would be our secret keeper. “The kiddos can tell her anything and she will listen and love them without judgement.” I shared.
My husband said, “You talk to your dogs?” like I was crazy!
We discussed names and all agreed on Bailey Mae.

‘And just like that, she became the smallest member of our family with the biggest heart.
Bailey Mae has taught my children boundaries. She has taught them responsibility and love. They love coming home to be smothered in her kisses. They know exercise is necessary and take great pride in taking her on long walks.

She has taught them not to raise their voice–Bailey Mae will come running at full speed to see what is happening. They have learned not to fight or strike at each other, Bailey Mae will growl and pull on your pant legs. She tucks them in one-by-one each night. Staying to be read to, cuddled and to have the days ups and downs whispered in her ears.
Bailey Mae is their first pet, an amazing addition to our family. She loves spending time with each family member. She attends tea parties and video game competitions. She loves every moment.

She loves going on vacations with us. Something that we strive to include her in so that she is not left at home.

She is my husband’s baby. The two of them are inseparable. He talks to her more than the rest of us! He once had the flu and was down for four days; Bailey Mae brought her toys in to the room and stayed by his side the entire time, leaving only to come and get me when his fever elevated.

Her most favorite thing in the world is warm laundry. She will bury herself in it.

While we love Bailey Mae, she came with fur…a lot of long hair. It’s soft and warm, but we find it everywhere she has been! It’s not a deal breaker by any means.

We have the power and ease of SWIFFER.
With families wanting to adopt pets during the holiday season, many aren’t certain how they can keep up with the mess that pets create.
Scott Foley, best known for his roles in television shows such as The Unit, Felicity andScandal, and in films such as Scream 3, has partnered with Swiffer to share that cleaning concerns shouldn’t be an obstacle that prevents you from bringing home your child’s first pet. With Swiffer products, just a few minutes a day, keeps our home clean and pet-hair-free. It is working smart, using the right tools and having time for all the moments your pet has to offer.
The Swiffer Duster makes cleaning quick and easy.
So easy that when a brown dog was roaming the neighborhood for weeks, looking emaciated, we made the decision as a family to bring him home. We named him Jeb and he sheds even more than Bailey Mae.

From my experience, and my children’s I can tell you a child’s first pet is an experience they will never forget. There is a special bond between animals and children. I’m not alone, 93% of American parents feel that having a pet is one of the most rewarding experiences a child can have. Don’t let the fact that they shed deter you and miss out on all the love they have to give.

Swiffer wants to share the joy of a clean home and an adopted pet. Swiffer is making a donation of $50,000 to various shelters to help meet their holiday needs.
