Vacay at Home: Turning Your House into a Mini Resort

Turning Your House into a Mini Resort: A Personalized Getaway at Home

Dreaming of a Vacation? Bring It Home

When it comes to family outings, we often dream of sun-soaked beach days or splashing around in a pool, temporarily escaping the stress of daily life. But with recent challenges like the ongoing pandemic, those once carefree public outings have become more of a risk than a reprieve. Even as vaccines continue to develop (CDC, 2024), many of us still hesitate to dive back into crowded spaces. So, why not bring that vacation vibe home? Creating your own mini resort isn’t just a luxury—it can do wonders for your mental health and offer a refreshing escape right in your backyard.

Take it from me. A few years ago, after canceling yet another family beach trip due to unpredictable weather, I decided to turn our backyard into a mini oasis. I still remember the joy on my kids’ faces as we set up our very own “staycation.” It didn’t take much—a few well-placed plants, comfy patio furniture, and a pool—yet it transformed our home into a getaway we could enjoy anytime.

Curious about where to begin? Let’s dive in!

Step 1: Invest in the Perfect Pool Design

The Pool of Your Dreams—No Matter Your Space

First things first, no mini resort is complete without a pool. Whether you’ve got a spacious backyard or something more modest, there’s a design out there that’ll fit your needs. Take my friend Emily’s home, for example. She lives in a cozy neighborhood with a smaller yard, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at her stunning freeform pool. The key is selecting a design that complements your space. Freeform pools work wonders in tight quarters, while larger backyards might benefit from a classic rectangular design or even a jacuzzi.

Not only does a pool enhance your family’s enjoyment, but it also adds serious value to your property.

According to a 2023 report from the National Association of Realtors, homes with pools can see a value boost of up to 7%. That’s a win-win!

Step 2: Boost Your Landscaping Game

Turn Your Yard into a Relaxation Haven

Imagine relaxing poolside, surrounded by lush greenery and the scent of blooming flowers. Good landscaping can turn that fantasy into reality. When I decided to revamp our backyard, we added a few trees for shade, fragrant jasmine bushes, and some stone pathways to guide the way to our mini “resort.” The result? A tranquil space where my family loves to unwind.

Landscaping isn’t just about aesthetics, though. It’s a smart investment. When you eventually decide to sell your home, that thoughtful landscaping could bump up your asking price by as much as 10%, according to a 2022 Zillow study. Even if you don’t have a lot of space, strategic landscaping can maximize your yard’s potential, creating zones for relaxation, play, and entertaining.

Step 3: Light It Up

Nighttime Ambiance for Late Swims

Ever find yourself lounging by the pool as the sun sets, only to realize that darkness has crept in? Good lighting can extend those perfect summer nights. Consider adding soft, ambient lights along pathways, in trees, or even under the water. When we installed warm, subtle lighting around our pool area, it transformed the space into a cozy retreat for evening swims or late-night family talks by the water.

But don’t go overboard—avoid harsh, glaring lights. Instead, opt for softer tones to create a relaxed, inviting atmosphere. Trust me, the right lighting makes all the difference.

Step 4: Patio Furniture: Style and Comfort Combined

Relaxation Doesn’t End with the Pool

Having comfortable and stylish patio furniture will enhance your mini resort. From a mini dining area to chaise lounges, the right pieces invite you to kick back, read a good book, or soak up the sun. When we added a set of weather-resistant chaise lounges to our backyard, it instantly felt like a retreat. And if you’re feeling crafty, try your hand at some DIY projects to add a personal touch.

Step 5: Water Features: The Final Touch

The Ultimate Relaxation—Add a Waterfall

If you’re looking to go the extra mile, consider adding a water feature like a small waterfall or rain curtain. Not only is running water soothing to listen to, but it also adds a touch of luxury. I’ll never forget the first time I saw a rain curtain installed at my cousin’s house—it was mesmerizing! You don’t need to go over the top. A simple, elegant feature can elevate your pool area into a full-on resort experience.

Bringing the Resort Experience Home

One of the best decisions I made was turning our home into a mini resort. Whether it’s a spontaneous pool day, a planned family gathering, or simply an evening of unwinding by the water, our backyard has become a place of relaxation and joy. It’s not just a space to swim or sunbathe—it’s a retreat where we’ve created countless memories.
