Our Farm Fresh Southern Cooking Review

We are eager at our house for Spring to awaken so our garden can get settled. I love cooking and it becomes such a labor of love when the children and husband and I have nurtured the plants that we feast upon through the summer. Farm Fresh Southern Cooking by Tammy Algood is a cookbook that resonates my own heart with the idea that it’s straight from the garden to the dinner table.

This book has an old-fashioned feel from cover to cover. There are recipes using vegetables straight from the garden (be it yours or the Farmer’s Market)! Algood even highlights local Farmer’s Markets all over the nation with short stories that feature them.  I love the versatility offered in this cookbook. Skillet Fried Chicken or First Cold Night Corn Potato Chowder are two that have me indulging in comfort food.

For awhile I grew up in the south and though it was short compared to my life span, I did come to enjoy the food there. This book is an extension of that Southern Cooking and allows me to share it with my husband and children.

How delicious and original do are these recipes:

  • Fresh Rhubarb Sauce–to be fair, I’m not a fan of Rhubarb, but my Grandpa LOVES the stuff!
  • Grilled Corn Salad
  • Stuffed Strawberries
  • Spring Collection Cucumber Plate
  • Spring Green Spread made from freshly shelled peas
Some of the recipes have me living memories. Like the Dilled Crawfish Salad. I remember being 13 and going to the creek with my friend Karen. I happened to spot these tiny lobster looking things in the water and she said, “Well, how ’bout that? Them is crawfish!” We picked up a few and took them home to her mom.

I’m also eager to try these recipes:

  • Peanut Sauteed Green Beans
  • Cheddar Muffin Pan Biscuits
  • Sweet Potato Caramel Pie
Pictures highlight the recipes…though, my usual complaint, not enough.

The instructions are to the point and I didn’t see one that looked like it was complex.

This book will get a lot of use at my house. It would make a great gift with a box of fresh produce for a neighbor, new bride or Mother’s Day. It’s a celebration of making recipes in season.
