It’s Simple Ingredients:
Crackers – This simple recipe starts with saltine crackers! (You can also use Ritz crackers, any salty crackers, or Graham Crackers) The crackers make for an easy bottom layer that’ll hold the toffee and chocolate well. The salt will also help cut some of the sweetness, and it’s a perfect combination!
Chocolate Layer – We like to use semi-sweet chocolate chips to help keep things from getting too sweet, but you can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate if those are your preference.
Candies – This Christmas Crack holiday treats is good as it is or with lots of chopped-up toppings!
- Pretzels
- M&Ms
- Almond slivers
- chopped Pecans
- Sweetened Shredded coconut
- dried cranberries
- dried cherries
- Marshmallows
- Crushed Candy Canes
- Holiday Sprinkles
- Hershey’s Peppermint Kisses
- Coconut Flakes
- Coarse sea salt
Why I love this Easy Sweet and Saltine Recipe:
- Just 4 ingredients. All you need to make this Christmas Crack is butter, brown sugar, saltine crackers, and chocolate – that’s it! The crackers are going to give the toffee a light, crisp texture.
- No candy thermometer is required. You need to boil the butter and brown sugar mixture for 5 minutes-a rolling boil. No need to use a candy thermometer, just exactly 5 minutes on the stovetop and a pop in the oven.
- It’s addicting! The combination of sweet and salty, homemade toffee and chocolate, with a crisp texture makes this candy recipe addicting. Even a double batch will disappear! It’s candy crack, People!
Ingredients:
1 Sleeve Saltines
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter
1 package milk chocolate chips, semisweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or Hershey Kisses
3/4 cup chopped pecans(optional)
1 Cup Crushed Candy Canes (optional)
How to Make Christmas Crack
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Line a 10″ x 15″ baking sheet (I use a jelly roll pan because it has edges) with aluminum foil and lightly grease with butter or use non stick cooking spray.
Cover the cookie sheet with a single layer of saltine crackers
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter.
Add brown sugar to butter, increase heat to medium high and bring to a boil.
Boil for 5 minutes, continuously stirring with a whisk.
You want it to be a rolling boil to evaporate some of the moisture, so it becomes like caramel.
Pour toffee over the saltines and spread it as evenly as possible.
Make the Toffee Mixture:
Bring butter and brown sugar to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Boil for 5 minutes, stirring with a whisk.
You want it to be a rolling boil to evaporate some of the moisture, so it becomes like caramel.
Pour toffee over the saltines and spread it as evenly as possible.
Place in the oven and bake for 5 minutes.
Upon removing, the sugar mixture is molten–be careful!
If your saltines shift while in the oven, rearrange them with a fork.
Allow cooling for about 5 minutes.
This will be your toffee layer.
Sprinkle the milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips over the saltines and toffee candy and let sit for about 5 minutes to melt.
- Melting the chocolate chips. Once you have your saltines arranged evenly, immediately sprinkle with chocolate chips. They will melt from the heat of toffee. Fun Fact: chocolate chips retain their shape when melted!!! Once the chocolate chips look glossy, spread them with a spatula evenly over the top of the saltines.
Once melted, spread the chocolate evenly.
If desired, sprinkle on pecans or crushed candy canes and press lightly into the chocolate.
Allow to cool at room temperature and then transfer to the refrigerator to harden.
Once it has hardened, break the candy into small pieces and place it in containers.
You can make this easy Christmas dessert up to 3 days in advance. Store Christmas crack in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
