“I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Jif. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.”
Peanut butter and pickles. It’s not your standard fare, but it’s what my kiddos ask for time and time again. Ask them what kind of sandwich they want and they will tell you, “Peanut butter and pickles, please!”
At our house it’s a sandwich tradition with a story just as rich in flavor. Charlotte the Great, my grandmother, worked at a Soda Shop at the back of a drug store during World War II. One day, she waited on a young soldier, whose request was for her to make him a peanut butter and pickle sandwich.
Grandma is pretty opinionated and let the young soldier know that his choice in sandwich combinations was very unappealing. He listened and then said, “Don’t knock it unless you’ve tried it.”
Curious, my grandmother later made herself a sandwich with pickles and peanut butter.
She loved the combination of salty, sour and sweet and the crunch of the pickles. It was her go-to sandwich.
Like that soldier in the small Soda Shop, my grandmother offered it to me as a child. I’m very much like Grandma and “eeww-ed” at the suggestion when it was offered to me. As I ate that sandwich surprised at its flavor, my grandmother told me the story.
When my children came along, Grandma began her wager and one by one she had us all sold on Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwiches.
We prefer Jif peanut butter with Nalley Valley’s Garlic and Dill Surfboard pickles–they crunch like no other pickle!
While we may never win Most Creative Sandwich, ours is a sandwich that gives us a glimpse into a young girl behind a soda shop counter, who ate crow and now carries on they legacy of a soldier, whose name she cannot recall.
