One Year After the BP Oil Spill Patti Pelican Celebrates the Heroes

A Children’s Story that Shares the Rescue Efforts of Wildlife

One year ago today, April 20, the media brought into our homes the devastation off the coast of Louisianna when the Deepwater Horizon Oil rig exploded into flames, releasing more almost 206 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Over the course of 100 days, we watched as BP tried to clean it up.

I remember watching the film footage of the brown pelicans saturated in oil. My heart hurt as these birds had just been removed from the endangered species list and suddenly were struggling for survival again. Thankfully, the International Bird Rescue Research Center, Tri-state Rescue Research, Louisiana’s Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service worked quickly and saved birds and animals that were threatened.

Author Lynda Wurster Deniger creates a story with characters that captivate and entertain where the oil spill comes to life through her book Pattie Pelican and the Gulf Oil Spill. I love that this book is non-fiction and shares the story of the birds and animals who were covered with oil, captured, cleaned, and rehabilitated by compassionate humans. My children loved that it was from the perspective of Patti Pelican!

Illustrated by Paulette Ferguson, Pattie Pelican, and The Gulf Oil Spill, the book comes to life with beautiful pictures in bright colors. Each page is an engaging picture that seems to tell the story by itself.

Our book came with an audio CD and Sing-A-Long Song which my children have taken to their room. I haven’t seen or heard from them in about 15-minutes. They are loving it.

Patti Pelican and The Gulf Oil Spill is a positive story that shares the bird rescue efforts. My children enjoyed reading it and have already asked to read it for bedtime.
