Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

Today’s Best Recipe is a Monte Cristo Sandwich.

A unique sandwich that we enjoy now and again is a Monte Cristo. A fried ham and cheese sandwich with a twist. It came about sometime between the 1930s to the 1960s. It’s been called French Sandwich, Toasted Sandwich, or French Toasted Cheese Sandwich; at our house, we call it “yummy”!

You can eat this sandwich savory or sweet. For savory, we serve it with horseradish sauce. If you prefer sweet, try serving it with your favorite fruit preserves.

What is a Monte Cristo sandwich?

A Monte Cristo sandwich is layers of ham, turkey, and swiss slices dipped in an egg/milk mixture and fried to a golden brown. It’s served hot.

How did the Monte Cristo Sandwich Get Its Name?

The sandwich is a tribute to The Count of Monte Christo, a novel by Alexander Dumas.

It has French origins, and food historians consider it a variation of a French Croque Monsieur.

The difference between a French Croque Monsieur and a Monte Cristo?

While both are hot sandwiches, the Croque Monsieur is made with French ham, Gruyere cheese, and occasionally béchamel sauce. Monte Cristo uses the original French Croque Monsieur original recipe and is then dipped in egg, pan-fried or deep-fried, then served with a dusting of powdered sugar.
