Zoe Saldana Shares the Strengths of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Zoe Saldana is Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. She is a character that stands out with her green alien skin. She’s the love interest of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and

Gamora is one of the strong female roles Saldana has played. She has played Nyota Uhura in the film reboot Star Trek. She donned blue skin as the alien hunter Neytiri in 2009 in James Cameron’s Avatar.

Gamora brings Sibling Rivalry to the forefront with Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that rivalry is heightened and we learn more about their story.

Saldana is fierce as a female. Her roles empower women to be themselves and not to shy away from being a leader and problem-solver.

This becomes the core of our interview, as we sit down to talk to Zoe Saldana about all things Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Saldana talks about the three female characters in the Galaxy: Mantis, Nebula, and Gamora. She shares her belief that they are all strong females, each bringing something to the story. For a moment she focuses on Gamora’s sister, Nebula:

“Nebula is just SO angry.

That anger seems to bring out Gamora’s very maternal instincts.

And Mantis is so honest and innocent.”

The three seem to carry the story of Guardians at some points. If nothing else, they are characters everyone can relate to in themselves.

Saldana talks about growing up and the limited number of strong, iconic female characters she had to look up to. She names Ellen Ripley from Alien and Sarah Conner from Terminator and then there is a pause.

“I took a gamble to fill that space in. I hope it’s making a difference.”

And while Saldana feels being a strong woman is important, she hopes her roles help young women and girls, also realize it is important and okay to be vulnerable.

“Being Strong is being vulnerable.”

All of these messages are evident in her character Gamora. We witness her relationship with her sister, Nebula develop. She adds that she hopes the storyline, at some point, goes deeper with Gamora and Nebula. She nurtures this role because of her very close relationship with her sisters in her own life.

Sometimes we judge a character based on appearances. For Gamora, that means green skin. It’s a process that takes 3.5 to 4 hours each day to be made up for. Watch this time lapse of her becoming Gamora for Guardians of the Galaxy:
