Our Review

This is Really Happening is a wonderful read with her signature laid-back writing that will have you laughing out loud, reading for the kleenex and pondering her wise words.

She authentically captures the agony and the ecstasy of the millennial experience, whether it’s her first kiss (“Sean’s tongue! In my mouth! Slippery and wet like a slug in the rain.“) or her struggles with anxiety (“When people throw caution to the wind, I am stuck imagining the poor soul who has to break his back sweeping caution into a dustpan“).

The first essay recounts her telling her friends she has cancer. It is powerful and helps the reader stay committed with her smart, witty humor.

Chack offers a fresh perspective on universal themes of resilience and love as she writes about surviving cancer, including learning of her mother’s own cancer diagnosis within the same year, and her attempts to hide the diagnosis from friends to avoid “un-normalizing” everything.

With the turning of each page, I was captivated by how insightful Chack is, and how much life she truly is living. It’s a life worth celebrating. From crappy jobs to working at BuzzFeed. A ten-thousand-mile-journey that ends with nearly being attacked by a bear.

Chack captures the agony and the ecstasy of the millennial experience hilariously. It’s a fresh perspective on timeless subjects of mortality, resilience, and love as each essay recounts her experiences.

It reads very much like a Young Adult book. It’s her signature voice. It’s unforgettable. It’s really her life.

I love the feel-good messages of self-discovery and overcoming obstacles. It’s an inspirational pick-me-up you’re going to want to keep within arms reach.

This Is Really Happening is smart, conversational, and powerful. It’s a book I find myself reading through again and again.
