Our The Fat Boy Chronicles Review

Every now and then my children surprise me. Most recently has been their incredible love for one movie. It’s not animated and it isn’t a fairytale. It’s The Fat Boy Chronicles, about a topic that sadly, keeps finding its way into the news: bullying.

The Fat Boy Chronicles Mommys Memorandum

We’ve had a few run-ins with bullies…an entire summer with the neighbors introduced my children to how cruel bullies are and it broke my heart. My children held strong to the core of who they are as it unfolded over fences in their front yard, and I am proud of them.

For an entire week, Li’l Man and The Divine Miss M have asked if they could snuggle together and watch The Fat Boy Chronicles before bed. I asked them what it was about and was told, “It’s so sad, Mom. The kids are really mean to the boy because he’s working on losing weight.”

“Why do you want to watch a sad movie?” I inquired.

“Because it’s so good. Jimmy doesn’t let the mean kids keep him from being Jimmy. He makes goals and he works to meet them. His Dad is his BFF.” They respond.

The Fat Boy Chronicles is based on a true story that follows Jimmy Winterpock. He’s the subject of brutal high school bullying. Jimmy overcomes the torment and reaches deep within himself to find the strength to focus on his goal of losing weight and winning over the girl of his dreams!

Heralded by critics for bringing real-world issues that affect teenagers to an audience looking for answers, the movie is based on the acclaimed novel by Diane Lang and Michael Buchanan.

The movie tackles not only bullying but teenage obesity. Jimmy’s teasing isn’t just from his peers, it also comes from the adults in his life. While most would crumble at the torment, Jimmy sets out to get his life under control in ways that he can. He begins exercising and eating healthier. His parents are right by his side; Dad even joins Jimmy on his runs.

I love when a show captures the beauty and dynamic of family. The Fat Boy Chronicles captures supportive parents who help their child through one of his greatest life battles. The movie shows the positive effects we can have on our children. It also opens the door for communication between our children and us to know that we’re here if they need help.

Mostly, this movie celebrates diversity. And that’s a beautiful thing!

Based on the Book of the Same Name

“The Fat Boy Chronicles” is actually a movie adaptation of a semi-autobiographical novel of the same name written by Michael Buchanan and Diane Lang. While the book garnered critical acclaim and resonated with readers, it did not reach the status of a best-selling book. However, both the book and the movie have touched the hearts of audiences with their powerful messages of self-acceptance and resilience.
