Two Interesting and Fun Tenali Raman Stories

The Thieves and the Well

The story focuses on king Krishnadevaraya going to jail for a survey. There were two burglars in prison, who asked for mercy from the king, and they also told him that if he released them, they would help him catch thieves. The king decided to release the burglars only if they could break into Tenali Raman’s house and steal his things.

After dinner, Tenali Raman was out for a stroll, and he could hear the rustling of the leaves and understood that there were thieves behind the bushes. He went inside and started telling his wife loudly that they had to put all their valuables in a trunk and throw it inside the well.

After some time, the thieves saw Tenali Raman and his wife taking the trunk full of valuables to the well and throwing it inside. As soon as they went inside, the thieves started drawing water to get hold of the chest. When they pulled the trunk out, all they discovered were stones. Tenali Raman thanked them for watering his garden.

The Greedy Brahmins

King Krishnadevaraya’s mother was highly religious, and she visited the king and told him that she was interested in offering ripe mangoes to some Brahmins. The king ordered his attendants to get the mangoes for his mother.

However, his mother died at night, and the king wanted to fulfill her last wish. The king called the Brahmins and asked them how he could fulfill his mother’s wish. The Brahmins were greedy and told him that his mother would be happy only if the mangoes were made of gold.

When Tenali Raman heard about this, he wanted to teach them a lesson, and hence, he invited the Brahmins to his house. When the Brahmins visited his home, they saw that Tenali Raman was standing with a hot iron rod.

Tenali Raman explained that his mother died because of rheumatism, and she wanted to burn her legs with hot rods to ease the pain. He wanted to do this with the Brahmins so that his mother could be happy. The Brahmins realized at once and returned all the gold mangoes to the king.

The moral of the story is that you should not be greedy, and you need to be happy with whatever you have.
