Our God Box Review

I believe the relationship between anyone and God is their own personal journey. It is not one for me to judge. We all walk our own path, communicate differently, seek guidance specific to our own path. We each have tribulations and trials that help us grow and help us in-spite of the immediate stress, anxiety and feelings of despair. It is up to us to find the strength inside and give it up to God and let go.

Mary Lou Qunilan’s, author of The God Box, shares her beloved mother’s “God Box”. Mary Finlayson, Mary Lou’s mother, passes away leaving the family grieving. Mary Lou searches for her mother’s private cache of notes to God on behalf of friends, family and absolute strangers. It was an act of love that spanned twenty years and to Mary Lou’s surprise, there is not one but ten boxes stuffed with the tiny petitions.

As she grieves and heals, Mary Lou reads these treasures, note by note, witnessing her mother’s wishes and worries.  Her mother turned everything over to God, asking for a cure for her own blood cancer to the right flooring for her daughter’s home. She penned down her requests on tiny scraps of paper, and placed them in the box, without expectation, allowing her to let it all go and turn her faith over to God.

As I read The God Box I was surprised at the depth of this personal journey. It was a glimpse into Mary Lou’s mother’s deepest thoughts. Despite Mary Lou and her mother being best friends, The God Box gave her a glimpse deeper into a mother’s love.

The God Box is not merely note after note. It is a creation of love, a tribute to her mother–every person who believes in love and family.

Mary Lou’s mother released everything she needed to get out into The God Box. It was her way of lifting the burden from herself. It’s a journey I won’t soon forget. In fact, it has inspired me to create my own God Box.
