Goin’ Coconuts-When Expectations Exceed Taste

When Expectations Exceed Taste…
A True Story

It’s a cool Spring Day.

Dad’s going out of town on Monday.

A school mates birthday party, complete with the magician.

A coveted viewing of How to Train Your Dragon in 3-D.

The perfect day for a six-year-old…or so you’d think.

She’s getting over a stomach virus.

She received word this morning that her parents are buffoons and don’t know how to operate the new answering system on the phone and therefore missed a message inviting her to a sleep-over with her best-friend last night.

She took those with resilience.

Enter the Coconut.

She’s had her eye on these round, hairy beasts for weeks now at the grocery store.

“Someday, I’m going to try one of those” she has announced repeatedly.

So, Dad claims the title of Hero by bringing home one.

She held it gently in her hands.

She shook it and giggled because it “sounds like my belly when I drink too much water”.

The time had come…breaking and entering.

The hammer bounced from the hard shell.

Then again.

Then again.

Then c-r-a-c-k!

We were victorious in how to open a coconut.

The pristine white meat called her.

She licked her lips in anticipation.

She shoved it in her mouth.

Eager to experience the thrill of making it hers.

Her nose scrunched.

Her chewing slowed.

“How do you like it?”

There was no answer.

Then while brushing teeth for bed, it happened.

She exploded.

Tears erupted from her blue eyes and leaped to their destiny down her cheeks.

“What’s wrong?”

“I WANT to like coconut!”

And there you have it…the true story about when expectations far exceed taste.
