A Crazy Caper About 5 Sheep, One Cell Phone, and the Greatest Quest of Their Woolly Lives
Twenty minutes of reading every night with the kiddos can either be the longest span of time or the most incredible journey. Some books have left me yawning and wanting the timer to ding, but not The Quest of the Warrior Sheep. Christine and Christopher Russell have written an incredibly hilarious and original story about a sheep herd of five and their epic adventure.
I appreciate the humor. The Russells pack this book full of wordplay that had me in stitches, and the kiddos were rolling right along with me. We’re talking laugh out loud reading.
For a week, we were all oozing, “Oh My Grass!”
The Quest of the Warrior Sheep Synopsis:
A silver object falls mysteriously from the sky and lands on Sal, a matronly Southdown ewe who lives happily with her sheep friends on Eppingham Farm. Sal was proud to be a great and ancient sheep family member.
She sometimes worried that the younger generations, even the four other Rare Breeds with whom she shared her paddock, no longer cared about their glorious heritage. Unfortunately for Sal, she can’t tell the difference between a cell phone and a divine message from the gods. The sheep are convinced that an ancient bovine prophecy is being fulfilled. The Eppingham Posse – Oxo, Links, Jaycey, Wills, and Sal – is fleeced up and ready to go. They must go North (so to Scotland, perhaps?), on a mission to aid Lord Aries, Sheep of all Sheepdom, Ram of Rams, in his battle against the powers of darkness in the shape of Lambad the Bad. Thus the Eppingham Posse of Rare Breed Warriors is born.
At the same time, a pair of bumbling criminals drop their cell phones from a hot air balloon. Luke and Neil, who have been stealing bank money over the internet, race to find the phone before someone looks through it and finds evidence of their crime.
A couple of wool bags aren’t going to stand in their way, even if they have to chase them all over London.
The Quest of the Warrior Sheep is one of our family’s favorite reads. It’s action-packed and hilarious. The humor was simple enough for my younger children to understand and still funny enough to capture my laughter.
I recommend The Quest of the Warrior Sheep. It’s great summer reading!
