Looking For Alaska

In 2002, we  went to Alaska. I think we were all captivated by the solidarity and beauty of everything there. The mountains seemed to erupt from the waters and the mosquitoes were the size of seagulls. There was wildlife in every direction and it was green beyond our dreams.

My husband and I returned again in 2004, during October. It was still the same breath-taking beauty I remembered. The mosquitoes were hibernating and the air was crisp.

Zac was small when he went, but still appreciated it.

Upon graduating this year, Zac has been going with me to the library and doing some reading of his choosing, rather than assigned reading for credit. His taste in books is different than mine, but we still engage in conversations about our books with each other.

One of the first books he chose to read on his own was Looking for Alaska by John Green.

While the book has been labeled controversial, there were lessons Zac learned from this book and it gave him a glimpse at some issues life sometimes throws our way. One day as he shared his night’s reading with me, he disappeared for a few moments and returned with an artistic interpretation of the book. A picture is worth a thousand words…
