Instant Pot Routine Cleaning

Before we dive into the deep cleaning process, let’s review a regular cleaning routine you should follow after every use of your Instant Pot.

This routine will save you a lot of effort when it’s time for a deep clean.

  1. Handwash or Dishwasher: Handwash or toss the inner steel pot in the dishwasher.
  2. Sealing Ring and Steam Rack: Remove the sealing ring and steam rack and wash them in the top rack of the dishwasher to prevent them from absorbing colors or odors.
  3. Lid Cleaning: Wash the inside and outside of the lid with warm, soapy water.
  4. Wipe Down: Use a damp cloth to wipe any remaining dirt on the inside or outside of the cooker.

How to Deep Clean an Instant Pot

Below are the steps to follow for thoroughly cleaning your Instant Pot.

  1. Clean the Base and the Rim
    • Unplug the Unit: The cooker base holds the microprocessor and the heating element, so unplug it for safety.
    • Wipe the Exterior: Using a damp microfiber cloth and a cleaning solution, wipe the inside and outside of the housing unit. Avoid using a dripping wet cloth to prevent water damage.
    • Clean the Rim: Food spills often get lodged in the exterior recessed rim. Use a foam paintbrush or a pastry brush to clean the nooks and crannies.
    • Dry Thoroughly: Wipe the inside of the housing unit and the rim with a dry cloth to keep them rust-free.
  2. Clean the Inner Pot
    • Dishwasher Safe: The inner pot is dishwasher safe. Place it on the bottom rack for a deep clean.
    • Handwash Alternative: Alternatively, handwash the inner pot using a damp cloth and white vinegar. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or steel wool.
  3. Wash the Lid
    • Soapy Water: Wash the lid with a sponge dipped in warm soapy water.
    • Add Vinegar: If necessary, add vinegar to the solution to eliminate any lingering smells.
  4. Clean the Parts of the Lid
    • Steam Release Handle: Remove this part by pulling it up and cleaning it with warm soapy water.
    • Silicone Seal: Wash the silicone seal in the top rack of your dishwasher or steam it to remove odors.
    • Anti-block Shield: Unscrew or pop off this part depending on your model. Clean it with warm soapy water and check the float valve for clogs.
    • Condensation Collection Cup: Located on the side of your pot, scrub it with hot soapy water if it needs cleaning.
    • Silicone Plug: Clean the plug at the bottom of the float valve with warm soapy water.
  5. Get Rid of Smells from the Silicone Sealing Ring
    • Deep Clean: Put a cup of water, a cup of white vinegar, and a chopped lemon rind in the pot. Seal the pot, run the steam setting for at least two minutes, and let the pressure release naturally. Open the lid, remove the ring, and air-dry it before replacing it.
    • Replace if Necessary: If the silicone ring is worn out, replace it before using the pot again.
  6. Final Touch
    • Wipe Over: Quickly wipe over the Instant Pot with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any water stains.

Storage Tips

  • Store with Lid Upside Down: Store your Instant Pot with the lid upside down to prevent moisture buildup and odors.
