When going places on a budget, especially when traveling to another country, our best bet is asking for help from travel agencies.
Travel agencies usually offer lower prices because they have access to promos and discounts given to them by carriers, hotels, and others.
However, if you are planning to take the entire brood with you, it’s best to avoid booking with a travel agency for these reasons.
3 Reasons Travel Packages are not a Good Idea
You don’t own your time. The main reason travel packages are affordable is that you are going on a trip with a group. Not your own circle, but along with other travelers you don’t know.
While this is a good idea to meet new people, especially if they come from different cultures, a trip under the mercy of a timetable you didn’t schedule is not at all feasible for your kids.
You know very much how having children around, especially young ones when on a trip takes up a lot of preparation time.
First, it’s a challenge waking them up in the morning. Second, everything they need for the trip seems to disappear all of a sudden just before leaving. Last, moving around with bodies more than your own is just tasking.
With travel packages, departure time is usually early in the morning and time spent in each venue is also limited. This is because these packages wanted tourists to visit as many places as possible in the short period they have availed.
Hence, you may be left behind, or you may not linger in the places you love.
You can’t choose the venue. Although travel agencies make sure you get to visit the top tourist attractions in a place, some of these may not be enjoyable for your family. That’s because usually, these spots are crowded because, yes, they’re popular destinations.
And when a place is crowded, chances are you won’t be able to enjoy the place. You won’t be able to get your perfect group selfie.
Also, kid-friendly places may not be part of these packages’ itinerary. Because our kids are not what these agencies have in mind when creating the IT, it’s most likely that kid-adored places have been left out.
Lastly, there are a number of great destinations that are not yet popular with tourists; and hence, they are not included in these packages. These places are usually the undisturbed ones where a crowd is few and far between.
You just don’t have the freedom. The main reason my family travels is to enjoy places together and to create memories and adventure we can happily talk about decades from now.
While packaged travel ideas sure do make memories, it may not be as fun when we create itineraries ourselves (which is 90% done on the fly).
When traveling, there will surely be countless of times when you’ll say, “That place looks interesting. Let’s go see that.” Or “I like it here; let’s stay longer.” But if you are on a journey under the jurisdiction of the travel agency, you have to add, “but that’s not part of the plan.” And walk away with a sad face on your kids’ faces.
Asking for help from travel agencies is not at all bad. If you really want to save a lot of money, by all means, book your next trip with them.
But consider yourself warned. Having a fixed plan you did not create may not turn out as fun as you hoped it to be.
