1. Stop the Water

When you are in need of a main water line repair time is of the essence.

First things to do when a pipe has burst in your home?

You need to turn off the water.

To do this, you’ll need to go to your home’s main water valve.

This valve is usually located under your kitchen sink.

If not there, it is usually where the main service pipe connects to your home.

(Pst- don’t wait until a pipe bursts to figure out where the main water valve is. Figure it out ASAP!)

You should also cut off electricity in the section of your home in which the water damage has occurred.

As soon as you have that main switch turned off, it’s time to drain the pipes.

In order to do this, run cold water on all of your faucets.

Also, flush every one of your toilets at least once and shut off your hot water heater.

The leak will stop once there’s no more running tap water.

2. Locate the Broken Pipe and Inspect Damage

After all the excess water has been drained, it’s time to locate the burst pipe.

If you’re lucky and the pipe break is small, you may be able to patch it yourself and save some money.

If it’s a bigger problem, you will need to call a plumber.

Not all plumbing companies are created equal, and you’ll see a great variation when it comes to pricing, quality, and customer service.

It’s good to have a plumber in mind beforehand so you’re not scrambling when an emergency happens.

You may find that you need other piping services taken care of as well, such as pipe relining.

3. Repair the Pipe On Your Own

If you decide to repair the pipe on your own, here’s what you need to do:

Gather an extra long section of garden hose and a few hose clamps

Measure the crack and cut the hose around 10 inches longer in order to fill the broken area

Slice the garden hose so you can slip it over the broken portion

Place the hose portion over the broken area and clamp it

If you don’t feel comfortable with doing the repair on your own, don’t attempt it! Calling a plumber is a much smarter move.

4. Get Ahold of a Water Restoration Company

If the water from the burst pipe got on the ceilings and walls, it’s time to call a water restoration company.

Opening windows and turning on fans is not enough to soak up wet areas, as this is simply an invitation for mold and mildew.

Also, make sure the electricity remains shut off in your home until all water has been cleaned up, as this can lead to electric shock.

So, there you have it!

That is how you take care of a burst water pipe.

As you can see, the biggest thing is to take action and not panic before the problem gets worst.
