Today is a sunny day and we are gearing up for the outdoors. It’s been one of the heaviest rain seasons and we know that once the mercury creeps up, the buzzing and bites of mosquitoes await. One bite and some of my family cancel the outdoors. There are repellents, but many contain DEET and other harmful chemicals, which is why we rely on Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller.
Thermacell is a brand we trust when it comes to keeping the bugs and pests away.
Out of the box, the Thermacell Patio Sheild is a modern, sleek cylinder. It doesn’t stand out like an eye-sore, or even a bug repeller. It is effective.
What’s Included with the Thermacell Patio Protection Unit:
- 1 Greenery Patio Shield Repeller
- 1 cap
- 12 hours of refills – 3 repellent mats
- 1 fuel cartridge
If you aren’t familiar with how Thermacell’s technology works, the cylinder has a liquid butane cartridge that ignites inside the device (there is no open flame). This device heats up a blue mat that contains allethrin (a synthetic version of a substance found in Chrysanthemums) instead of DEET. It should be noted that you want to keep the Patio Sheild away from uncovered food during operation and avoid inhaling directly. It should also be noted that allethrin is highly toxic to fish, bees, and cats.
As the device reaches a certain temperature, the allethrin releases from the mat into an air, producing a barely noticeable to humans smell, but one that mosquitoes find repugnant. The smell creates a 15-foot zone of protection.
The unit utilizes Thermacell’s older viewing window that glows orange with the internal heat to let you know the butane is burning, however it also offers an optional feature the manufacturer calls the ZoneCheck Monitor which allows the user to see when the heating area is warming up and when it has reached the ideal temperature to release the allethrin.
Thermacell’s Patio Sheild features a cap on the top and bottom of the unit. The top cap is simply protective when the unit isn’t in use. it covers the heating area and a honeycomb plastic grate that holds the blue allethrin mat in place. This unit includes integrated mat storage to keep everything in one place.
The bottom cap can be removed from the cylinder to reveal ports for the liquid butane fuel cartridges and four AA batteries (not included). Each butane cartridge has a runtime of 12 hours each approximately. The batteries are not required for bug protection, their job is to power the ZoneCheck Monitor.
The allethrin mat is foil packaged and comes with the unit. It slides between the heating area and the honeycomb securely. Each mat lasts approximately eight to nine hours.
We think the Thermacell Patio Sheild works great and it allows us to sit back and enjoy being outside. There is no mess to deal with and we love that the potential side effects of bug spray aren’t part of the equation. Sure, it has to be used with caution, but it is effective without applying repellent to the skin. The active ingredient has low toxicity for humans and works.
Be in your element without the swatting of pests and discomfort of bug bites, try Thermacell Patio Sheild and enjoy life to its fullest.
