I’m sure you’re tired of hearing how much I love True Blood so I suppose I can switch and tell you I also love Twilight..but you’d miss how I found the Laughing Vixen Lounge! It was that dashing Viking Vampire, Eric Northam from True Blood!
Once I discovered my love of all things Vampires my love affair continued…Dexter, Scooby Doo and more! All this on pendants, charms, bubble braclets! My heart was going pitty-patter!
This is one of the most fun etsy shops I’ve encountered. It’s the brain child of Kris Kluempke of Portland, Oregon. The name Laughing Vixen Lounge starts the fun:
“Vixen comes from using lots of the old pinup girls and pulp fiction covers. In the early days of my jewelry being created I had used “Ebrace your inner Vixen” as a tagline.”
“Lounge was used because I wanted it to have a feel of somewhere you could go and hang out at. Plus the whole lounge scene is very retro.”
“The Laughing because I was having a hard time finding a domain name and needed to add something different in there. So Laughing Vixen Lounge was born. And really isn’t there a Vixen hidden inside all of us?”
Maybe Kris was inspired to open her Etsy shop as a “last laugh”. “What inspired you to open your Etsy shop? My friends and I were always crafty people. I always enjoyed more artistic things. After working way too many years doing the 9-5 mind numbingly boring thing I finally decided to start creating something better for myself.”
The talent behind Laughing Vixen Lounge is saturated with sleepless nights, trial and error and bonding with new friends. Kris credits her talent to “Google! Ha! I spent so much time on the internet searching, reading and looking. There are some great people out there who share great how to’s and such. And then a bunch of trial and errors until I got it right. I still learn something new or different all the time.”
When it comes to finding what sets Laughing Vixen Lounge and its products apart from others, Kris wastes no time in telling it like it is. “Well, I am very picky about quality so that sets it apart from quite a few. Otherwise I would say it’s the style/themes that are more unique. It’s not something that you’ll find anywhere else. And I make lots of custom stuff so you can have something that is one of a kind.”
She believes in all her products so when it comes to picking an absolute favorite, “I would have to think that would be like a parent picking their favorite child or a musician picking their favorite song they wrote. I don’t think I have a favoite one but I really like making the chunky charm bracelets. There is just so much life to them.”
It takes only one peek inside the Laughing Vixen Lounge to discover what inspires Kris to create, “I am a movie junkie. Anything pop culture is where almost everything comes from. I just love it all and it makes for some interesting creations. It’s really just stuff I would have loved to have when I was a teenager.”
The Laughing Vixen Lounge has a huge selection of already made bracelts, pendants and more, but if there’s something you don’t see, Kris is all about custom orders.
Kris is not stranger to custom orders and customer satisfaction. She shares the process of making bracelts. “A good example would be 2 bracelets I am making for a customer. She wanted a Lost and a Fringe bracelet for her friends.”
“After asking her a few questions to see if there is anything specific she would like (colors, pictures, size etc) I start thinking what represents the show. I use from 6-10 items charms so I start looking for those. Things that represent elements of the show or the different characters. Like a polar bear, airplane, palm tree, etc. for Lost.”
“Then I gather the pictures for the picture charms, pick a few bead choices and email them to her and see what she thinks. Once it’s all good I start building the bracelet. Stringing diferent bead combos until I find what works. “
“After a couple of hours I have an amazing peice ready to go.”
When Kris isn’t creating she likes to “Go to the movies, travel and just enjoy life.”
One of the crafts Kris doesn’t know how to do but wishes she did is “I do wish I could sew really well. I can do the basics but it would fun to make bags/totes and such.”
They say when one door closes, another one opens. This holds true for Kris when it comes to finding time to create. “After too many years as a hair dresser I unfortunately did some damage to my back so was not able to work anymore. I now have all the time in the world to create.”
She’s not ready to claim a greatest accomplishment in life. “I would hope it hasn’t come yet as I can’t think of anything to great. But starting my own business is something I strived for a long time. I am very proud that it is finally taking shape and coming to life.”
