We received Switchmate products in exchange for this post. All opinions and our love of technology remain our own.
If you watch too many horror movies, listen to paranormal podcasts, or just want the comfort of security, Switchmate, an AA-battery-powered magnetic light controller, might be right up your alley.
The Switchmate Bright is a wireless controller for your existing light switch (toggle or rocker style) that physically toggles the switch on and off with your smartphone or a simple touch. It originated as an Indiegogo campaign.
Switchmate measures 4.9 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide, with a 1-inch depth. It weighs 4 ounces.
Installation is ridiculously easy. Snap it on, and you’re done!

Switchmate Design and Features
The Switchmate light switch is available in white or ivory color. It’s a plastic hub with a touch-enabled switch on the front and a motion sensor at the top.
The Switchmate light switch has two magnets on the back that make installation a cinch–no tools or wiring required.
The slot on the back fits over the existing light switch, and a motor inside the Switchmate hub manually flips the light on and off.
Switchmate is designed for a one-gang switch. It is narrow enough you could use two hubs on a dual-gang switch.
Installing the Switchmate Bright
It seriously doesn’t get easy than this.
Slide the back off the Switchmate and insert the AA batteries (included). Put cover back on.
Switchmate is not hardwired and therefore relies on batteries. Using batteries means it uses low-power Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi.
Place over existing light switch and installation is complete.
From here you install the Android or iOS Switchmate app on your mobile device. The app has a great guide that walks you through the setup. Switchmate does not use Wi-Fi nor does Switchmate need an active connection to the internet to work.
Using the Switchmate Bright
Now that installation is out of the way; it’s time to use Switchmate. Touch the front of Switchmate to toggle the on/off switch. When the switch is touched, a blue LED will blink. This is the easiest way to use the Switchmate.
Switchmate does not have a dimmer features. It’s on or off.
But I told you Switchmate is about modernizing your home. We’re looking for a smart home experience; right? This is where the Switchmate app comes into play.
You also may use the app to toggle the switch, set the switch to turn on/off at predetermined times or use your voice in the app to tell Switchmate to toggle the switch.
Yup. The app is where you configure the settings for timers, motion detection, and enable the welcome home feature.
Switchmate features two timers; one allows you to turn lights on and off at designated times. The second allows you to repeat the times based on the day of the week, weekends and more factors. You can specify not only the times but how long you want the light to remain on after the motion is detected. You don’t have to be within Bluetooth range for the Smartswitch timers to work, which is a great bonus.
The Welcome Home feature is designed for Switchmate to turn on the lights when you arrive home. This feature only turns the lights on; you’ll have to turn them off yourself.
Switchmate has a 150-foot control range for the switch, and you can see if the light is on or off through the app.
Sometimes we experience a brief lag between the app and when the switch toggles. We found this usually occurs when the switch hadn’t been used in a while. It’s nothing big and most likely if we weren’t writing a review, we wouldn’t have given it a second thought. The majority of the time we found Switchmate to be instantaneous.
I will also mention here that there is a very hushed motorized sound when the switch activates. It’s to be expected; there’s a motor inside.
And psst…Switchmate doesn’t have to be controlling lights; you can set it up to wirelessly-control your ceiling fan! You’re welcome!
In addition to Switchmate Bright, there’s also Switchmate Power, an adapter that plugs into a single outlet – doubling it in the process. Each socket can be controlled remotely.
Tech users may celebrate the fact that Switchmate Power also has two USB ports for charging and an LED nightlight feature. Also, based on the proximity of the mobile device, it can turn things on or off automatically.

I love the Smartswitch outlet for so many reasons. Like the light switch, it offers easy installation. You plug it in.
My favorite part is that I can wake up, tap the app and turn on the space heater in the bathroom to heat it up before I sleepwalk into the room.
Both Switchmate products offer compatibility with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Nest, Samsung Home, Wink, and other home automation platforms and hubs. Check the Switchmate website for more information on compatibility.
If you are seeking a smart lighting feature for your home, but aren’t interested in the cost of brand new bulbs for all your light fixtures, or you don’t know much about wiring, Switchmate is an easy way to modernize your home and transform it into a smart home.
