Spelling Bee Competition

Spelling Bee Competition

On Tuesday The Divine Miss M came home from school with a note that she would be representing her class in the school’s First and Second Grade Spelling Bee. This was a proud moment as a mom. She is among the top three spellers in her class. Woot! Woot! To that!

Then I looked at the words we were to practice…four pages, four columns, front, and back. There were no words on her weekly spelling tests. In fact, my husband’s response upon reviewing the words was, “I can’t spell half of those.”

For two nights we studied like Munks. We recited. We spelled. We repeated. We used dry erase markers and covered the windows in words. We used post-it notes for spelling. Our dinner conversation was about spelling words. Our trek to and from the bus stop was spelling words. It was intense.

This morning, we showered and got ready (while spelling words). We went to breakfast at school and at 9:15 am The Divine Miss M, and her 18 competitors entered the auditorium. They were given the instructions. They drew their positions.

The Divine Miss M drew Position #2.

At 9:30 am the 19 seats on the stage were filled. The Divine Miss M sat like a lady in Seat Two confident of her now much larger spelling expertise.

The Spelling Bee started, and the first person walked to the microphone. Her word was given. “What”

The word was spelled, “W-H-A-T.”

The judges announced, “That is correct.”

The Divine Miss M walked up to the microphone.

Her word was given, “OBSERVE.”

Very clearly, The Divine Miss M spelled her word.

“A-B-S-R-V”

The judges announced, “That is incorrect.”

The Divine Miss M took her seat with her class, the first to be eliminated from the Spelling Bee.

That first round eliminated 40% of the competitors.

It went on for seven full rounds; three rounds exclusive to two Second Grade students, a boy, and a girl battling for first place.

In the end, it would be the Second Grade Boy who owned the title of Spelling Bee Champion (First/Second Grade).
