Maintaining a refrigerator will ultimately help save on the costs of replacing this vital appliance. There are some repairs and fixes that require an expert technician, but a few routine maintenance chores can be done in a few minutes time.
Clean, Inspect and Replace Refrigerator Seals
The seals around the doors of your refrigerator need to be cleaned and checked often. They are what keeps the tight seal that traps the cool air inside the refrigerator. Any leaks or weakness will cost you in energy and overwork the appliance. Keeping the seal clean will mean less build-up of mildew and the material will stay pliable. If it remains soiled, it can become brittle, inflexible and crack.
Clean the Condenser Coil
Most refrigerator condenser coils are located on the bottom. Keeping this clean of dust and dirt will allow the refrigerator to run smoother. The condenser coil is one of the most expensive parts to have replaced.
Change Water Filters
Refrigerators with water dispensers normally have an internal filtration system. These filters need to be changed periodically for optimal water quality. Change them, or have them changed on the routine schedule recommended by the manufacturer. It will improve the quality of the water and ice.
Clean and Inspect the Drip Pan
There is a drip pan located at the bottom of the refrigerator. It is there to collect any water condensation but can become full, clogged or develop leaks. Keeping this part of the refrigerator clean and empty helps it last longer with no problems of unexpected leaks. There is a serious amount of water that can be released when the temperatures and humidity are high. Empty the water to eliminate a source of water for bugs and rodents.
Monitor Temperature Control
You should use a thermometer to check the temperature control periodically, especially if you feel something seems off. Contact a repair service if the temperature control needs to be fixed. You do not want to risk frozen foods unexpectedly thawing, or not staying frozen completely.
Clean the Interior Frequently
Pull all items out of the refrigerator and clean the interior from top to bottom. This is a good time to inspect the inside for any damage. Keeping food spills clean will reduce odors and the chance of food-borne illnesses to set up house.
