School starts for us August 27. We’re starting to organize backpacks, check off supplies and wind down summer. I want my children to succeed at school and I volunteer a lot during the school year. I know things like a good night’s rest, healthy breakfast and reading every night helps.
Last year Li’l Man did half day Kindergarten. Whomever invented this didn’t have multiple children. I spent my entire day running back and forth to school. I’d drop kids off at 9am, head back at Noon, back at 3:30. It was insanity. Friday’s are a short day and that schedule was even more bonkers. By March I’d had enough. There was no down time. I was exhausted and dinner and homework were suffering. We joined Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA). It was the smartest thing I did all year.
Now Boys and Girls Club of America and Disney have partnered to launch the Tools for Back to School initiative. It features a pop-quiz style game, where supplies are donated to BGCA for every correct answer you score. I’m encouraging you to play this and help Boys and Girls Club of America.
I attended several Boys and Girls Club of America afternoons and it was something my children talked about every night. It’s a tremendous program. I witnessed children whom I know would go home to no parent belonging to something. I saw children whose parents aren’t equipped to help them with homework getting one on one guidance. Many of our teachers are part of BGCA so there is someone there who knows the school, knows the teachers and understands assignments. The after school program also offers a hot meal. This is important to me because when I was PTA President I learned that more than 78% of our students are on FREE or reduced lunch, for some of them, school was the only hot meal they got.
In addition to Disney, BGCA has also partnered with JCPenney. Through the month of August, you can join JCP Cares and round up your purchase at the register to benefit BGCA. It’s a great way to give while you’re out doing school shopping.
You don’t have to attend BGCA to benefit, their website offers educational content and tip sheets for parents to download and utilize. Visit BGCA, view the left hand side under the “Get Ready” header and see what they offer.
Boys and Girls Club of America is an incredible program. You might be surprised to learn that Denzel Washington is their MOST FAMOUS Alumni. It’s a program that gives back to your community, fosters values and offers a safe haven for children who otherwise might not have a place to go. Boys & Girls Clubs annually serve nearly 4 million youth through Club membership and community outreach.
Join Mom Central for a Boys and Girls Twitter Party on Thursday, August 23rd from 3-4 PM EST.
