You spend hours getting ready, and you look fantastic. Then, you take the obligatory selfie to take advantage of all your preparation work. And there it is…. the dreaded DOUBLE CHIN. Double chins can happen to even the slimmest of people. But there is finally a solution for your double chin that does not include camera angle tricks or facial exercises.
WHAT CAUSES A DOUBLE CHIN?
The actual cause of a double chin is stubborn fat located in the area between the neck and chin referred to as submental fat. It is located right beneath the skin and affects men and women equally. It can actually cause people to look heavier and older than they are.
Double chins can be caused by the aging process. As the body ages, the skin loses its elasticity. Another cause can be weight gain. Gaining weight does not always cause a double chin, but it can definitely be a contributing factor. Another possibility is poor posture, which can make the appearance of a double chin. This can worsen over time. One other reason is genetics. If you have a parent or parents who have a prominent double chin, you can have a genetic predisposition to having that same trait.
WHAT ARE SOME REMEDIES THAT PEOPLE USE TO MINIMIZE THE DOUBLE CHIN?
Many people have tried the chin exercises that are supposed to help get rid of the double chin, including lip, jaw and tongue exercises for strengthening. Others have tried to lose weight to reduce the fat in the double chin area. Various creams and ointments have been developed to reduce the double chin appearance. Most have found that these methods provide little or no results in the improvement of the double chin appearance.
There are two permanent methods for getting rid of double chins that plastic surgeons can provide. The first is fat removal by liposuction. This method can remove the excess submental fat that is present. It works by having the fat cells suctioned out with a small cannula attached to suction. Since the physician can treat more areas of the chin and surrounding structures, this method can achieve more specific results.
The second method is called Kybella. The Food and Drug Administration approved this technique in 2015 for treatment of stubborn double chin fat. It works for adults who are considered to have moderate to severe areas of submental fat in the double chin area only.
Kybella is a minimally invasive treatment that must be done in your plastic surgeon’s office. After the physician performs the examination, he or she will discuss your expectations for the procedure to develop an optimal treatment plan for you.
The injectable treatment is made by using a synthesized version of a naturally occurring bodily fluid (or bile salt) called deoxycholic acid. This process called cytolysis works as the bile salt breaks down the walls of fat cells, allowing them to be reabsorbed back into the body. This substance is injected into the area of submental fat, permanently eliminating them and the ability for fat to develop in this area again. Each patient requires a different number of injections or sessions to provide the level of treatment needed for the results they would like.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM LIPOSUCTION AND KYBELLA TREATMENTS
Liposuction can usually be done under a local anesthetic with two tiny incisions behind the chin or ears. After doctors “sculpt” the area with the cannula, the patient must wear a compression bandage to prevent seroma or areas of liquid from forming in the surgical site. Patients can usually return to work after one week and are back to regular activities after about two weeks. There is some bruising and swelling that can be expected with liposuction. Doctors can achieve more results with liposuction due to the ability to go beyond the actual area of chin fat. Final results will be seen even up to six weeks following liposuction.
Kybella treatments are considered to be less invasive because they are done through a series of injections. The physician uses the smallest needles possible for Kybella injections to reduce any bruising or pain during the treatment. Most often, there is no need for even local anesthetic use. However, some patients may feel more comfortable requesting it.
Immediately following the treatment, patients may notice some slight bruising, warmth, swelling or numbness in the injection area. These generally resolve within several days of treatment. Normal activity can be resumed shortly after the Kybella injection session. There is no downtime necessary following the treatment appointment. Some results can be seen following the first Kybella appointment. Final results will be seen about three to five months following treatment.
