It’s that time of year when the tune in the air is “Here comes Peter Cottontail. Hopping down the Bunny Trail…Hippity Hoppity Easter’s on its way…” This delightful tune is the creation of Steve nelson and Jack Rollins.
The 1971 TV Special that brought Peter Cottontail into homes across America was co-written by Burgess, however it was based on a book written in 1957 by Priscilla and Otto Freidrich titled The Easter Bunny that Overslept.
The song became famous in 1949 when it was recorded by Gene Autrey. This original recording was done on a 78rpm. It was also recorded by Roy Rogers.
The 1971 TV Special, “Here Comes Peter Cottontail” has a great cast of voices like Danny Kaye, Vincent Price (as January Q. Irontail) and Casey Kasem voicing Peter Rabbit.
Freidrich’s story, where young Peter Cottontail dreams of becoming Chief Easter Bunny and seeks to win the honor by delivering the most eggs on Easter, followed with a sequence made in 2006 and titled “Here Comes Peter Cottontail: The Movie”. In the sequel voices of Roger Moore and Christopher Lloyd are heard. The sequel is the story of Peter’s son, Junior, who seeks to keep Irontail from making Winter a never-ending season.
