Thinking back to my childhood, pets played an important role. Perhaps they were my first love. Growing up there came this discovery that each of my pets had its own personality that made it unique from the others. Even those times I didn’t quite “fit in”, I came home to a pet that loved me for me and nothing less.
And so begins a children’s book:
“When I was a kid, I had a pet weasel. I think that’s a rather unusual pet for a kid to have. But I was a rather unusual kid.”
Thus begins the story of a misfit boy who, in a spontaneous moment, buys a secret pet that sparks a series of fantasy adventures where the two travel through space and dream of living on the moon. Back on planet Earth, trouble arises when the boy’s pet escapes during a class field trip and turns an entire science museum upside down.

Once Upon a Weasel is a lovely children’s book.
Sort of a love story between a boy and his pet weasel who learn about having dreams and even more important sharing experiences.
I found Once Upon a Weasel to be a book filled with imagination, moments of humor, wisdom, and a glimpse at humanity.
At 32-pages Once Upon a Weasel is the perfect length for a bedtime story, or just curling up for an afternoon cuddle.
The book is hardcover and has easy-to-read, and concise writing. I absolutely love the illustrations and find them to be engaging. The pages are vibrant and flow with the text. My tweens enjoy just looking at the drawings and discovering the detail.
It’s a fun story that I read a couple of times on my own. It took me back to being a child and having a pet that was my companion, best friend, and a dream chaser.
Packed with humor, imagination, action, wisdom, and humanity, these 32 pages will surely take you and your family on a memorable ride.
The font is well chosen and easy-to-read and easily becomes the narrator’s voice.
“Once Upon a Weasel” could well become a favorite bedtime story at your house, just as it has at ours.
ONCE UPON A WEASEL is a full-color picture book for children best suited for those 5-9 and the adults who read to them.
*We received Once Upon a Weasel in exchange for this post. My opinions and love for reading remains my own.
