Many years ago I met a young man from Austria. He amazed me with his hockey skills. He spoke four or five languages. He was proud of where he was from and family was important to him. It was a friendship I, to this day, treasure.
Recently, I was introduced to another talented individual from Austria. Meet Petra. She lives “some miles south of Vienna” and she is the talent behind “Mami Made It”.
Right away her honesty blew me away as we discussed how “Mami Made It” got its name. “I filled in the form for opening a shop and thought only a second about a name and “Mami Made It” was the result.” It seems typical, right? But after a short pause she confessed, “Now, I wish I would have taken more time to think about it and choose the name more carefully. But that’s it. Thankfully, I can live with the name.”
Just as spontaneous as the shop name, is the story behind how she came to open her shop. “A friend of mine makes jewelry and asked for my help to open a shop at Etsy because she is not so good with computers. That’s the first time I heard about this platform. I joined then too.”
One thing that is not so random is Petra’s talent. She learned it “from my mom. We were three kids at home and she always made the clothes for us.”
She is diligent in her work and gives attention to detail. “I invest much time in my work and I work very carefully. My bunnies, for example, take a lot of time to make and I think people can see that in the quality of my workmanship.”
The bunnies she speaks of are her absolutel favorite creation. “I made several prototypes, changed, corrected and improved the pattern. It is quite tricky to assemble them. It is every time a challenge.”
Petra is constantly on the look out for new things and is inspired by the work of others. “I see things in shops or in the net which are nice and lovely but wouldn’t it be better to change this and make it upside down and the inside out. I always want to improve things. After some time of drawing patterns and making notes, I ask myself if I would want to have such an item and if yes I try to make it.”
While she loves her craft of sewing, what really appeals to her soul is “I am a passionate gardener. We have a really big garden and most of summertime you can find me on the riding mower or picking weeds.” She is also an avid reader. “I love reading middle age thrillers” and your ordinary gal next door “I like going to the movies. I like barbecues with my friends and I love my family. I am married and have a 4 year old daughter.”
While she enjoys sewing there are many talents she wants to acquire. “I wish I had the talent to paint. I haven’t so I don’t try it. But two years ago I bought the equipment for making mosaics, time to try this. And another thing I want to try sometime is pottery.”
With so many loves, when she’s not creating for “Mami Made It”, gardening, reading or doing everyday things, she admits when it comes to finding time to craft, “Oh, that’s hard! I only have about 3 hours, 4 days a week to do some crafting. My working space is separated from the other rooms, which should be good. But when my daughter is around I can’t work because she wants me to do something with her.”
Like so many of us, Petra’s greatest accomplishment in life thus far is “My family! We are happy. We are well. We love each other.”
She is happy in her life. She’s not looking for big changes ten years from now. “I hope I will be the same person as right now, maybe with a successful etsy shop. Besides that nothing has to change, because my life is quite perfect right now.”
It’s this same joy in her life that gives her pause and then she adds, “I think it is important not to be creative for profit or somebody else but for oneself. My creative work makes me proud and satisfies me.”
