If you’re a Mom you’ve probably received that one of a kind, original artwork–better known as the “Macaroni Necklace.” I’ve received a few–some plain, some painted, some mixed with plastic beads.
It was perhaps, this simple art project that gave Julia, from Constantia, New York the foundation for what is now “Jewelles.” An online store that sells beautifully handcrafted jewelry.
My own name is Julee, and when Julia told me how she chose her shop name, it struck me all too familiar, “Jewelles is from my name of Julia. Friends call me ‘Jewels.'”
Remember that “Macaroni Necklace”? It’s where Julia learned her talent, “I learned to make my first necklace from my Grams. We made macaroni necklaces, and I gave one to my mom who still has it 50 years later! lol”
Julia has done her own thing for awhile, owning “abrick and mortar shop for years in Liverpool. I closed it and went to eBay for years. A friend mentioned how friendly Etsy was, so I opened a shop.”
One glance at “Jewelles” and you’ll discover the romance! “My style sets me apart from others. I have a softness about my Jewelry and a beauty flow between the beads and the findings. Color flows complement each other. I like to make my own findings which makes it more one of a kind.”
Julia has left “macaroni art” and though the story of her first necklace and it’s existence some 50 years later, her absolute favorite creation is a bracelet. “I created a woven bracelet with my handmade polymer roses and Antique Swarovski AB crystals. I made a sterling silver hook and eye clasp with my telltale spiral.”
It’s these moments and things that begin the creation process. “I usually start off thinking or dreaming about a piece. I see it made in my head first lol alto it usually won’t look like what I had seen in my head. After I get an idea, I then sort out the beads and findings and start. I may take it apart several times before I get it just right.”
Julia has many talents outside of her studio. “I love to sing! When I was younger, I took vocal lessons and sang at weddings and church. I love to cook! A really happy day for me is dirtying every dish in my house!
There is an extensive list of crafts Julia would love to learn: “Oh there are many! art clay, lampworking, ceramics, soldering, using a knitting machine, paper mache a bust, learn to throw a plate, lol the list goes on and on!”
As a Mom, I struggle with time to do anything outside of kiddos and hubby. When Julia was asked how she finds time to create, she gave me hope! “I am lucky enough to be of the advanced age where time is my own and a husband that enjoys me being creative as I can be!”
Ten years from now, Julia sees herself “Living closer to my family and teaching my young nieces and nephews to craft and cook. I also would hope to have a garden I can tend from my wheelchair.”
Julia has a positive, cheerful disposition and reminds us all, “Being creative is to be open to the wonders of this world!”
Her customers agree; check out their feedback on Julia’s work:
“A beautiful set!!! I was going to give it as a gift but so tempted to keep it for myself! Great seller and easy to work with! AmysonPie”
“Incredibly pretty earrings — even nicer than pictured! Excellent service too! Many thanks! portrepublic”
You can view Julia’s work through her Etsy shop “Jewelles,”
Julia says, “What I love best about these earrings is the color! I was inspired by the color of the sky the day I made these. The lovely deep blue sky on that sunny day last summer!”
