Baseball. The all-American past-time. With opening season just days behind us, its fitting that Home Run by Travis Thrasher is gearing up to hit theaters beginning April 19.
It’s a story that’s fiction, yet could be based on so many true stories. It’s not one problem we explore in this story line, its many, but there are solutions and a message on where we can all go to find our own solutions.
Meet baseball all-star Cory Brand. He knows what it takes to win in the big leagues. But off the field, with memories of his past haunting him, his life is spiraling out of control.
Scott Elrod, portrays the main character, Cory Brand. On the field we see his talent–the same talent that is increasing his fame. Off-field we witness the spiral of destruction as Brand turns to alcohol and rages with anger. It’s a reflection of our culture’s obsession with celebrities. It’s a testimony of how we quickly forget their indiscretions and wrong-doings, seemingly erasing our line in the sand of own personal core values and boundaries. The boundary of possible no return is when Cory injures a young fan in a fit of anger and alcohol induced judgement.
Hoping to save her client’s career and reputation, Cory’s agent, sends him back to the small town where he grew up for some community service and hopes for sobriety in a twelve-step program. In true spoiled celebrity fashion he fights the demons of his past, his present and cannot see his future clearly as he tries to balance his family and a little league baseball team he’s coaching as his community service.
As his young players help him experience the joy of the game, Cory discovers his need to find freedom from his past and hope for his future … and win back the love he left. With this unexpected second chance, Cory finds himself on a powerful journey of transformation and redemption. HOME RUN is a powerful reminder that with God, it’s never too late … freedom is possible.
While the film is predictable, it offers a message that there is possibility for all of us if we are willing and the acting is very good. I enjoyed this film and thought it was, as its title, a HOME RUN!
