By now you know I have a thing for felt. It’s the perfect texture and has an array of colors. I love it!
Nadine Johnson creator of HeartFelt4Kids has taken felt to a whole new level–Children’s Apparel. Not just ANY children’s apparel: “Charming natural fiber wool blend felt children’s apparel. Highly embellished with machine embroidery, fancy stitching, decorative snaps, velvet ties, random rhinestones and lined with 100% double brushed cozy cotton flannel which is framed in felt. Inside details meant to delight and inspire. Nouveau Vintage garments to be cherished for years to come.”
The name is clever and came to be as Nadine tells it, “It was ‘Heartfelt’ from day one when I first had the idea, it just seemed apropos, and the ‘4 kids’ was to define it better.”
Nadine and her HeartFelt4Kids shop came to etsy not too long ago. “I heard about Etsy a couple years ago and, lately, many people who saw what I do said that was the place for me, so I checked it out and opened a shop about a month ago. I’m really impressed by all the talent. Online marketing it new to me and I like the supportive community of people sharing a common endeavor and desire, plus all the technical support for all that’s required to run an online business. It has also provided great experience while I put together the heartfelt4kids website. “
Like most of the talent in my features, grandmothers share their love of sewing. This is true of where Nadine learned her talent. “My grandmother sewed. In fact, I have her Singer treadle sewing machine and some baby clothes she made for me which my children also wore when they were babies. My mother sews so it has been generational; that’s how things get passed down.. a nice tradition, I think. I started very young making doll clothes and then my own.”
One peek into HeartFelt4Kids and you’ll immendiately recognize what sets Nadine’s product apart from others. “HeartFelt 4 Kids has an old world charm to it. I like to call it Nouveau Vintage. There’s an heirloom quality, something that is not ultimately disposable and that can be passed on. I use felt, the oldest textile on the world, which allows for some really fun design elements and line them with cozy flannel. Highly decorative machine embroidery and stitching just add to the charm. The inside is as pretty or fun as the outside… delightful to look at, delightful to wear. I often embroider words or phrases inside the garment. When personalized with names, dates, occasions, etc, HeartFelt 4 Kids garments and accessories are truly keepsakes.”
It’s difficult to find just one item to claim as a favorite. Nadine experiences this same feeling, “Well, I actually fall in love with each one as I’m making them, that’s part of the fun, but I do love the little girl’s cape with the Red and Black Hearts.”
Nadine’s inspiration comes from “Color, mostly. Sometimes I make something just because I like working with that color at that time.”
With a background in retail business, Nadine carries over her experience to the creating process of her items, “I’ve always found if I assemble the elements, materials that attract me, it just sort of falls together. I used to have a retail business, Native American goods, and just by gathering beautiful things that I liked, the displays always just came together, well, beautifully. It was a lot of fun as is what I do now.”
Outside of creating, Nadine says, “”I’ve returned to New York after many years in Miami Beach and NY just provides so many opportunities from cultural to natural.””
On her list of crafts she’d like to learn how to do. ‘Weaving. I lived in Sweden for a while and saw some beautiful weaving, as well as many other crafts.”
When it comes to making time to craft, “I approach this as a livelihood, a commitment I’ve made to create the life I want where I can look forward to each day’s work.”
Family is Nadine’s greatest accomplishment. “I have two great kids with good heads and good hearts.”
