My grandmother is my best friend. She wasn’t really there for me when it came to lady troubles. She was the youngest of four girls and when her lady thing happened, she said, “I didn’t know what to do, so I did what my sisters did and kicked my underwear under the bed!”
As I crept into my 40s, it was Grandma, who taught me, accidentally, about the things that happen to a woman’s body. As we strolled the supermarket aisle looking for period pads, it occurred to me that my grandmother was in her 80s. “Grandma, why do you need pads? Haven’t you gone through menopause yet?”
She shared with me, right there in the aisle how she had a hysterectomy and so I could only ask, “Okay? So? Why are we needing pads?”
That’s when she leaned in and whispered, “I leak.”
I didn’t press the issue until a few years later when I laughed out loud and I leaked.
I won’t go into the details about that visit Grandma and I had at the doctor, but I did learn about Light Bladder Leakage (LBL). It’s totally normal!
WHAT IS LBL?
-One in three women experience Light Bladder Leakage (LBL) – little leaks that can be triggered by everyday occurrences like coughing, sneezing, laughing and exercise.
-Weak pelvic floor muscles, pregnancy, childbirth and weight gain are just a few LBL contributors.
WHAT CAUSES LBL?
Just as no two women are alike, there’s no single reason that LBL happens. Some of the most common things that lead to uninvited leaks include:
•Physical changes from childbirth, pregnancy, hysterectomy or menopause
•Complications from surgery, stroke, or chronic diseases like diabetes, multiple sclerosis (MS) or Parkinson’s disease
•Bladder or urinary tract infections
•Bladder irritants (certain foods and beverages)

In honor of my grandmother, and in celebration of my children we encourage you to Recycle Your Period Pad. My kiddos came up with a great way to recycle them.
They’ve reinvented period pads as the Forehead Game. They love this game in the car, before dinner, anytime.
2. Without the participant seeing the word, stick the pad to the player’s forehead.
3. Take turns asking “yes” or “no” questions geared toward helping the player figure out the word stuck to their forehead. As long as the questioner gets a “yes” response, they keep asking questions. Once a “no” response is given, the next player gets to ask the questions to determine the word on their forehead.
4. First player to correctly guess their word, wins the game.
The great thing about using pads for this game is they come with sticky backs, just peel and play!
