As a parent, it is so important to ensure that your children remain as happy and positive as possible. Life can throw us in all sorts of directions, but the one thing that gets us through these times is a positive outlook and ‘can-do’ attitude. Danuta Tomasz, assistant director of education at Cognita Schools, states that ‘learning from failure is one of the best routes to success’… this is so incredibly important to remember. There are many ways to encourage positivity amongst our growing bundles of joy, whether it be through positive thinking or a positive environment.
Firstly, you are only going to be able to enforce a positive attitude if you are present. Spend time with your children and learn to understand the things they enjoy and like to talk about. From here, you will be able to help them focus on their strengths rather than their weaknesses, and teach them to always focus on the positives in life rather than the negatives. When you spend time with your children, you can test out various activities and exercises that get their minds thinking and happy thoughts flowing.
A great exercise to carry out with your children is to get them to write a list. A list full of actions that they get rewarded for and things that they enjoy doing. Place this list in various places around the house. This list will act as a positive reminder at all times; reminding your child that there is always a reason to smile.
As well as spending time with your children, you will need to start putting care into how you speak to them. Telling your child that they can tackle whatever challenge is thrown at them will work as a positive reinforcement and stick with them throughout all walks of life. Without getting into the nitty-gritty psychology talk, positive self-talk will become a positive self-fulfilling prophecy.
It may seem like a little thing, but having good manners will not only prove that you are a polite person but also makes you feel good about yourself. Research has actually shown that if a person is well-mannered, then they naturally carry good common sense, respect others, have consideration for others, and have confidence in themselves. All very good traits to hold!
Now, regarding environment, you will soon learn that a physical environment also contributes to a positive outlook. The main environment change that you can implement is what you feed your children. Encouraging your children to eat healthy and nutritious meals from a young age will stick with them forever and help them to grow into strong and healthy adults.
It is also important to ensure that your children spend enough time in the fresh air, as being stuck in cramped environments can have a seriously negative effect on your mood. Bright and open space leads to a bright and open mind!
At the end of the day, just make sure that you are there for your child when necessary and give them the space they need when necessary, too. Positivity leads you on a route to success and ever-lasting happiness… important for both you and your family.
