I dream of custom closets.
I suppose the dreams started long before the 1998 premier of Sex and the City. Carrie Bradshaw enhanced my love for many things: shoes, fashion and a circle of friends that accepted me for who I am. Then, too, I have to admit, her custom closet is pretty fantastic!
Carrie Bradshaw’s Custom Closet
Really! Think about it. Touring your first apartment with the man you love–in Carrie’s case, Mr. Big–it seems perfect until the closet doors open to something more along the lines of MY closet, which causes Carrie to state, “Well, now I understand the divorce” referencing the previous tenants and why the apartment is on the market.
For me, I’d have had to settle, but for Carrie, she had Mr. Big who does builds a custom closet, complete with glowing, glass-enclosed sub closets!
Joanna Stayton Proving that Custom Closets are also for Yachts
Women and their closets. They are what we envy. Joanna Stayton from Overboard proves that custom closets are worthy of even the most prestigious yachts. Poor Dean Proffitt, building an oak closet with a revolving shoe rack and still being called the fool when Stayton chastises him with “Why am I even amazed? One would think you would know that closets are made of cedar!” There’s even an entire Pinterest Board dedicated to Stayton’s closet and all the lovely shoes that could fill that rotating shoe rack!
Seasons come and go and through them all we are daughters of a consumer society. We save for an indulgent purchase, we pile it in our closets. Shoes, bags, clothes, household items, beauty products and more.
We’re gearing up for Back to School. It’s a change of seasons and requires each child to try on every article of clothing they own and gift it if it’s too small or place it in their closet for the weekly rotation. It minimizes our hoarding and gets the closet organized to start the school year.
Organizing My Closet While Dreaming of Custom Closets
I decided to be the leader, and set the example with my own closet.
It’s a mess…shoes out of their box, boxes of shoes piled on the ground taking up space for other items. Beauty products everywhere.
The closet is divided with wired shelving.
Quite frankly, looking at these pictures, I can’t believe I confessed to this closet being mine.
I utilize my closet several times a day. It’s a storage area for not only my clothing and shoes, but my toiletries, first aid and more.
Some folks like to clear everything out so they can start “clean”. To me, this seems overwhelming. I just started with my clothing. I organized it by color and how I wear it–shirts on top, pants/skirts on bottom. While I like the idea of shelving in the closet, I realized that the shelves take up space and the height wasn’t always perfect for my storage needs.
This is where custom closets would be awesome; shelves designed to fit the various items I have to store.
Like, Carrie Bradshaw, I have a thing for shoes. They flood my closet floor. I keep them in the box, for easier storage, but I actually moved the boxes from the floor to a shelf above my clothing. I took pictures of the shoes and will attach those to the outside of the boxes when I pick the photos up from the retailer.
Shoes seem to be the centerpiece in celebrity custom closets. I’d love the shoe factor Mariah Carey’s closet has…no boxes, just beauty at all angles for the eye to behold.
A cubby is a great option if you don’t want the boxes (they take up room). Slim shoes like flip flops and ballet flats can be placed two to a cubby slot and you can even incorporate storage for belts and scarves.
I use a large tote on the shelf for items that fold up small such as my undergarments, socks and tights.
Nicky Hilton utilizes drawers to make her custom closet look polished–though if you look closely, she doesn’t keep anything in those beautiful drawers!
One thing I once read that I’m going to try is to turn around all the hangers in the closet so the hooks face towards you (the wrong way). As you wear an item, put it back with the hook the normal way. At the end of the season, or six months, if the hanger is facing the wrong way, it’s time to gift the clothing because you haven’t worn it.
So? After an hour or so of being focused on the closet clear-out, my closet now looks like this:
and here’s a close up from inside:
I might work it a little more but I think it looks much better and it’s far more functional.
I’m still going to dream of some day having the closet of my dreams. One where shelves are made for my needs and I can utilize drawers, cubbies and even add a chair.
I love Olivia Wilde’s custom closet!
