I love buttons. I have fond memories of them from my childhood. My mom would sit at the sewing machine and I’d sort through her button tin. I loved the shapes, the colors the textures.
Meet Jennifer of Grand Ledge, Michigan. She works with buttons and other items–like guitar picks–to craft some very unique and fun jewelry. Her shop, Clever Crafter, is aptly named.
“Once I started showing friends and family the different crafts that I was making, there seemed to be one response I always got: “how clever!” It seemed very natural to use that as my shop name once I decided to join Etsy.”
There is no shortage on the crafts Jennifer can do. She says, “Most of my crafting has been self taught and learned from books. My mom taught me to sew when I was younger, helped me to make small quilts and even a denim jumper when I was in middle school. I was very proud of that jumper! She also taught me to cross stitch, but my crochet, knitting, beading, scrapbooking, stamping, and many other crafts are self taught with the help of books and of course, experimenting!”
Jenniefer’s mind may wander and lead her to amazing ideas, but there is a process to her creations. ‘Color selection is always my first step in any craft. The colors seem to speak to me, and once I have them chosen, it’s a very natural process to completion of the project in question. I also like to have music or the TV on, just for background noise. I tend to concentrate better with noise than I would be able to with silence.”
Coming from a family of talented “artists”, Jennifer sees the possibility to learn new crafts. “I did watch my mom do silk ribbon embroidery for a couple of years growing up and always thought I wanted to learn that. My brother is the artist of the family, drawing, sketching, and painting, and I’m incredibly jealous of his talents in those arts. Other than that, I would love to further my experience with cake decorating. So much fun and very tasty to eat!”
Jennifer shares one of the secrets to finding the time to craft. “Luckily, I have some projects that are easy to do in short periods of time. Button bracelets are often made on my breaks and lunch at work. I can usually get one done in about 20 minutes now! I also leave a crochet project at work to do on breaks, either a small afgan or a shawl, just to give me a break from processing claims. Other than that, I often take crafts to work on when I’m at my boyfriends or other friends. It’s easy for me to complete jewelry prjects or work on crochet while talking with friends!”
Always learning, Jennifer says her greatest accomplishment in her life so far is “I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management in 3 years and went back to school a few years later for Massage Therapy. Even though I no longer work in the chiropractic office that I managed and massaged in, I am still very proud of myself for completing two such different degrees and using the massage to help people that are in pain or discomfort.”
And “Now through March 17th! Any item in my Clever Crafter shop that is ALL GREEN is now running 20% off! After purchase the 20% will be refunded to your paypal account. Take this opportunity to prepare yourself for St. Patty’s Day in style! Nobody likes to be pinched for not wearing their green on March 17th!”
