I’m looking forward to summer when life slows down a bit and I can craft. I enjoy sewing–by hand or machine and after reading through the pages of Mary Jane Baxter’s, Chic On A Shoestring, am really excited to start creating! I love that this book presents low-cast ways to accessorize and even make myself a little more chic. There are projects to sew by hand or by machine. In all there are 40 projects!
I love the chapter on Sensational Shoe Stoppers (page 53). There are creative, no sew ways to lace shoes, add embellishments and more that transform an ordinary pair of shoes into something more.
The Tea-Towel Apron is a fun project with step by step instructions, including how to make a ruffle. I love the pictures the compliment the directions. It makes for an easy project that won’t frustrate someone new to sewing.
The book is a great resource to the basics of sewing and I’m looking forward to sharing it with The Beauty Queen and The Divine Miss M in helping them create something that captures their personality and gives them fun accessories. The vintage dash will be a great way to share various decades with them.
One of the best things about Chic On a Shoe String is that it teaches how to recycle and repurpose so many things from old clothes to broken necklaces. A ribbon becomes a belt, shoe laces a charismatic choker and a silk scarf a summer top. It’s a fun way to learn to sew and build a wardrobe.
After 12 years, Mary Jane Baxter Mary Jane Baxter, a BBC correspondent turned milliner, who blogs here, to bolster her creative talents and train as a couture hat maker. Her expert crafting skills landed her with milliner Stephen Jones in London, Marc Jacobs in Paris, and with her very own collection at the Harvey Nichols flagship store in Knightsbridge.
The same passion that inspired Mary Jane to leave her reporting job to work in fashion full-time shines through the pages of her new book. With more than 40 unique and stylish ideas—including quick and easy no-sew projects– Mary Jane inspires readers to create their own covetable clothes and accessories.
Chic on a Shoestring is available directly from Penguin or at any retail bookseller.
