Baseball is Grandpa’s favorite sport. He’s not necessarily about the stats, though I am sure he knows many. For him it’s the game. He knows the players and tells their stories as if they are our family history being preserved in the threads of each generation. Currently, he lives near Pittsburgh and enjoys the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Li’l Man and Miss M are fortunate in they get to go to Camp Grandma and Grandpa during the summer. This year it was a two year adventure filled with fishing, Kennywood, swimming, Michaels Passport to Imagination and so much more! Nearing the end of Camp Grandma and Grandpa the kiddos each had a date night. Miss M with Grandma and Li’l Man with Grandpa.
Miss M is her grandmother’s mini-me. They have the same mannerisms, speech cadence and look so much a like. Here they are at Christmas last year together:
The girls went to the beauty parlor for their date night.
Li’l Man. He’s a different story. Grandpa is his hero. He always has been. From the time Li’l Man was old enough to recognize him, Grandpa has been his number one.
Here is Li’l Man with Grandma and Miss M a long time ago.
Now Li’l Man is bigger.
On Friday, June 27, Li’l Man and his Grandpa boarded a bus and headed to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates play ball!
Prior to this adventure, I worried Li’l Man was not going to like the game. We talked about it and I tried to prepare him.
Then came the phone call.
Li’l Man LOVED the game. He was so excited about it all. He shared he has baseball cards, and knows the players! He has a ball cap and tee-shirts. His shoes are the color of the Pittsburgh Pirates (black and yellow).
He may not know the history and stories of the sport like Grandpa, but a few more summers at Camp Grandma and Grandpa and he’s sure to have committed a few to memory and have new ones to share with the next generation.
Maybe baseball really is the All-American sport!
