“I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Aflac. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.”
In 2007 I was a Team Lead.
On my team was a woman who was my age.
She was smart and more often than not offered TMI, which made me always be aware that a trip to Human Resources was imminent.
Still, I liked this woman.
One night near Thanksgiving, after the office had become a distant place in my day, my telephone rang, and I answered to hear this woman’s voice on the phone tell me that “Glenn was trapped under a shed.”
Glenn was her common-law husband.
They had been together for nearly 14 years.
Initially, I thought it was all a joke.
She was at the hospital waiting for news.
In a crazy turn of events, Glenn was not crushed by the shed, which was the size of a small house, but he suffocated.
This woman had to make a decision to “pull the plug”, leaving her a single mom of three children.
I admired this woman’s courage and strength.
She planned a funeral, organized Thanksgiving, and returned to work on the fourth day.
As the bills began to roll in, I realized that health insurance doesn’t cover it all.
The medical charges were staggering and exceeded the cost of her home.
It was an unthinkable accident that no one could have foreseen.
It would have caught most of us off-guard.
One day a few weeks after she returned to work, I called her to my desk to make sure she was okay.
I remember that conversation, expecting it to have me going to my supervisor and asking for assistance in setting up a fund to keep her afloat financially.
As we talk, she smiled and said, “We’re okay. I have Aflac.”
This woman who always shares way too much had planned for the unexpected.
She had a back-up that helped her.
Aflac’s supplemental insurance offset the unexpected costs of Glenn’s accident, fill in the gaps in their health care plan, and gave her room to breathe knowing that her family’s financial future was not ruined.
She could grieve and move into the role of mother and provider.
I urge everyone to prepare for their family’s unexpected.
Realize that there are costs that will soar when an unpredictable illness or injury takes place.
Try Aflac’s “Real Cost Calculator .”
It’s simple to use and gives a glimpse of the comprehensive costs associated with medical conditions.
Users can view the calculator as it first estimates expenses not covered by major medical insurance.
Then, it calculates everyday household costs, such as childcare and groceries, which continue if you or your spouse ends up out of work.
Finally, it explores the out-of-pocket costs during pre- and post-treatment, such as transportation to follow-up medical appointments or necessary remedial equipment.
This process can show you how Aflac’s supplemental insurance offsets these unexpected costs and fills the gaps in your health care plan.
For a woman one November evening in 2007, Aflac gave the opportunity to feel secure and know that there was light at the end of the dark tunnel she was traveling.
It didn’t change the chapter that left her a widow, but it did change the ending, allowing her to live life without financial doom.
