Moving to a new home is an exciting time. When you start fresh in a new dwelling, you get to decide what paint colors to choose for the home, where to put your furniture and how to decorate. There is a lot to do, but first, it is important to clean the space properly. You want to move into your new home with a completely clean space. Follow the five cleaning tips below to ensure your home is ready for move-in day.
Clean High Before You Clean Low
This trick is essential to cutting down on your cleaning time. Take for example the kitchen. Let’s say you have kitchen cabinets that do not go all the way to the ceiling. You clean the countertops, oven, fridge, etc. and floors, but forget to clean off the tops of the cabinets. Once you go high and clean, you find the area is filled with dust and dirt. As you clean the higher items in the home, the dust and dirt will float down to areas you have already cleaned. When going into a room within your new home, be sure to clean the higher areas first to avoid any extra cleaning in the long run.
Use This Time to Declutter and Get Rid of Old Things
Moving into a new home is a great time to declutter your belongings. Over time, it is easy to accumulate stuff. When you are moving, take time to get rid of old things you no longer use or need. This will help you to move into your new home with a fresh start, free of any overwhelming clutter. Look at each item as you pack up and think of the last time you used it or if you really need it. This will help you to decide whether to keep, donate or trash an item.
Wipe Down EVERYTHING
When moving in, take time to wipe down everything in the space. The walls, counters, cabinets, floors, etc. all need to be cleaned. Take a few days to ensure that you wipe all surfaces to create a clean environment for you and your family. This would include door knobs, cabinet handles, etc., all surfaces that are touched and used frequently. Every surface should be cleaned and disinfected to ensure the home is providing a healthy space.
Fully Disinfect or Upgrade the Fridge
If the homeowner left you a refrigerator, it must be disinfected before you begin using it. Take out all the drawers and compartments, including shelving. Use green home cleaning solutions and hot water to give the fridge a good cleaning. If the fridge is in poor condition and you can afford a new one, chuck the old one and install a new unit to avoid any need for cleaning. Often, previous homeowners may neglect to clean the fridge on a regular basis or leave food behind which can lead to a stinky problem for the new owner.
Vacuum and Properly Clean All the Floors BEFORE Moving In
Floors are one of the dirtiest areas of the home. Before moving in, take time to vacuum all carpeting. Sweep and mop all hard surface floors. You want to remove any germs or built up dirt and grime from your flooring before you begin to bring in furniture.
Once you are moved in, it will be more difficult to provide a deep clean for your home. Before you begin the move-in process, take time to vacuum, mop and treat any existing carpets to a nice deep clean. Your health will benefit as well as your stress level as you are easily able to move in when the place is neat and spotless!
