Rejoice – spring is (sort of) here, and while many parts of the country are still thawing out, that won’t stop millions of men and women from hitting the stores and their favorite e-commerce websites for new spring fashion. If you’re one of them, you’re probably trying to navigate your way through a maze of the latest styles, prints, colors and more.
It’s not easy. There are dozens of new trends out, and while some of them worth exploring, many should get a hard pass. Here’s a breakdown of the looks you should be going for this spring (and which to scrap from your future wardrobe plans).
YES: Thigh-High Boots
Let’s face it: Spring weather can be unpredictable – especially in March and April. One day it’s beautifully sunny and warm. The next? 40 degrees and snow flurries. Sometimes it’s difficult to determine whether it’s time to put away the ear muffs or bundle up for another couple of weeks of winter.
Welcome, thigh-high boots. Perfect for showing a little leg during those warmer spring days, yet long enough to cover you up if the weather takes a turn for the worse. What’s more, you don’t have to go with traditional black or brown; pastels are great for spring and go great colorful handbags, light jackets, and blouses.

Pearls are in the midst of a renaissance. They soared back into popularity in 2016, and it has been pedal to the metal since then (it probably helps that celebs from Taylor Swift to Kris Jenner are frequently spotted adorning in the gemstone). Best of all, they are so versatile that it’s pretty difficult to mess up a look with pearls. You can’t go wrong with a sleek necklace or a simple pair of traditional or black studs.
The hot look right now, though, is layering. Layering multiple strands of pearl necklaces (or any kind of necklaces, for that matter) can be tricky. Do it right, and you’ll look super fashionable. Do it wrong, and you’ll end up with a tangled not around your neck. Check out this guide for help buying the correct necklace lengths.
Here’s a fabric that’s back with a vengeance, and we mean that in the best way possible. This spring, velvet boots, and handbags are “in” in a big way. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, you can go with a velvet shirt as well. As with boots, though, remember you don’t have to stick to black. This year, designers are mixing it up with bright colors and patterns.
NO: Bulky jewelry
Enough with the thick, chunky necklaces and loud bracelets. The trend left as quickly as it arrived, and it’s time to move on with sleeker, more minimal designs. Try layering simple gold and silver chains around your neck, and spice it up with one pop of a gemstone (we’re always a fan of jade). Again, make sure you know how to layer correctly before attempting the look.
The Kardashian sisters might be trying to bring it back, but please don’t hop on the bandwagon. Unless you’re a 12-year-old middle school girl, this ship has sailed.
NO: Layering Florals
One floral-patterned item provides a great pop; a floral handbag with a white tee and some fresh denim, for instance. But throw that handbag in with some floral shoes and a brightly colored top, and you’ll end up looking anything but stylish. With floral and other loud patterns, remember that less is sometimes more.
