To celebrate and honor military service, Dollar General chose Sparky Edwards as its Every Day Hero for June 2013. Sparky exemplifies the Every Day Hero. He is a retired, decorated military veteran who served in South Korea and in Iraq. Once an at-risk teenager, Sparky turned his life around with the help of a National Guard youth academy. The fresh start helped him earn his GED and enter the military. Today he is a successful business owner, pursuing his PhD and paying it forward by volunteering to mentor at-risk teenagers.

    my son.. he has come up against som great odds.. not being able to speak..being slow. and now he shines.. he excells in everything he does.. has lettered in several sports..travels all over with people to people student embassador program. is on the honor role and oral interp at hios school.. and still manages to give me hugs..

    My father is and was my hero. Though there were times I could have strangled him for some of the things he said in front of my friends or boyfriends growing up, I think back now, that he’s been gown for 13 years, and wish I could even hear some of the things that made me cringe.

    I don’t think I could chose just one hero, I have so many wonderful people in my life. If the issue was forced I would say my big brother, he always protected me from anything he thought would hurt me. He was a great man.

    My son! We have gone thru many trials and tribulations and he is such a great kid!! He is getting ready to graduate from high school and go on to college in the fall. Something we have never got to experience ourselves. He is just so smart and determined and fantastic at overcoming many an obstacle!

    My Mom and Dad both would be my hero’s. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. They have comforted me, loved me, helped me grow. They have even helped me with my own 4 children (almost 5). I wouldn’t know a lot if it wasn’t for them.
