Two years ago, we moved into the house we are in now. It has a rodent problem, so we got a cat.
The cat slept all day and then wanted to go outside at night–when the mice were running through the cabinets.
We got nowhere with the rodents.
Then my husband said he would take care of the issue.
He set a couple of traps.
On one occasion my grandmother and I were sitting at the kitchen table when we heard the trap snap. I went and got my husband, who disposed of the mouse and the trap.
He never replaced the trap.
One mouse down, but plenty still to go.
This process was far too slow.
My husband goes out-of-town and when the house is quiet, I can hear the pests rummaging through the cabinets.
I can hear them shredding potato chip bags and cereal boxes for nests and the tasty treats that rest inside.
It grosses me out.
So recently, I have taken measures into my own hands.
I’ve been the one setting the traps, baiting them and regretfully, the only one to dispose of the rodents.
In three days I nabbed six of ’em.
I pull on rubber kitchen gloves, cuff my sleeves with rubber bands, pull my hair back and do as much as I can with closed eyes.
It’s not fun.
It breaks my heart.
I suppose war is like this.
Just so we’re clear. I don’t like spiders either.
We have some big, ugly ones that sometimes are discovered in the basement.
Snakes are right up there too, though here in Utah, we don’t really see many of those in the valley–whew!
Rodents and insects just aren’t my thing.
The rodents that live, uninvited, in my walls are also getting smarter.
I’ve discovered they are extremely fond of Nutella. I know this because I keep baiting the traps with it and they keep licking them clean–all the way to the metal. They no longer are tripping the trap. So, essentially, I’m serving a buffet of Nutella to my uninvited guests and not catching them!
I told my husband I may have to call in expert help.
I don’t think he heard me.
Today I’ll be sealing cracks and holes.
It’s time to bring this game to an end.
What war are you fighting in your home?
