National Geographic Kids: 5,000 Awesome Facts and It’s Gross! #Review and #Giveaway

My children enjoy reading. I love the time we spend together reading together, especially when we can laugh out loud or offer banter. National Geographic Kids is filling our reading slot with two incredible books. They are captivating enough that my husband will listen and entertaining enough to hold the attention of my active Li’l Man. Both books are created for kiddos ages 8-12 years.

National Geographic Kids: 5,000 Awesome Facts and That's Gross

National Geographic Kids: 5,000 Awesome Facts and That’s Gross!

The first book is 5,000 Awesome Facts (About Everything).  It’s more than a trivia book. It’s filled with fascinating facts on topics that kiddos are interested in and love. Li’l Man had us read the page on medieval times and castles more than once. I enjoyed learning about chocolate. The kiddos couldn’t believe how many peanuts it takes to make peanut butter. Beyond food there’s animals, toys, games, mysteries, reptiles, robots, sports and wacky words. The photographs are the quality National Geographic is known for with vivid colors, with facts, design and pizzazz over-lays.

Reading National Geographic Kids: 5,000 Awesome Facts

Since we have been reading this book I have been enjoying listening to my children in conversation. They are beginning to incorporate some of the facts into their everyday conversation. It’s hilarious and yet feels me with pride. It’s what reading is about–being entertained, taking something from the book and applying it to everyday life.

This book is hard-cover so it is holding up to being handled over and over each night, in the mornings and during down times at our house. It rests on our coffee table and is attention getting to our neighbor, family and friends.

The second book, That’s Gross: Icky Facts that Will Test Your Gross-Out Factor is the hands-down favorite. Why? Because it is absolutely GROSS! It takes smelly, sticky, slimy to new levels. I love the almost poetic writing that makes it just flow and my kiddos loved that as we read, Dad couldn’t help but say, “C’mon! This is disgusting! Why are we reading this?” The kiddos would squee with excitement over the photographs (which are just as gross). The book is lead by a Dung Beetle and there is a page in the front to return to when things get over the top gross…it’s called, The Happy Place!

Some of the topics had me gagging: barf, boogers, mummy making. My kiddos just wanted more. In spite of the gross-out factor, the facts are good and so many of them are just part of our everyday life–thankfully, we just don’t have to think about them. This book is clever..it teaches while appealing to kiddos warped humor!
