“Just because I’m upside down doesn’t mean everyone has to be. Isn’t that the whole point?”

Beatrice Zinker, Upside-Down Thinker by Shelley Johannes is an upcoming middle-grade release that celebrates quirky Beatrice Zinker’s topsy-turvy way of thinking on a top-secret mission.

Beatrice Zinker has always been different. She loves thinking upside-down. Her family is a right-side-up kind of family, so it isn't easy being Beatrice. She climbed out of her first box (crib) as soon as she was able, said "Wow" for her first word, and asked "What if...?" instead of learning her ABCs and 123s. But in second grade, she won an award: Beatrice Zinker, Best Upside-Down Thinker. There was no telling what she could do after that! But "it's hard being cofounder of a top-secret organization, the work was never done."  She is an optimist and is convinced her best friend Lenny will join her in her ninja spying ways even though the other girls have decided playing veterinarian is a better recess option. Full of spunk, humor, and great illustrations, this will be a book I will want on the shelf as soon as it comes out. It's fantastic! <a href=This is an adorable look at a little girl who is a little different. And it’s an amazing view! A must-read for all kids. This is the cutest book! Shelley does her own illustrations too and they do not disappoint. Beatrice is someone you want in your classroom library who will teach the kids about the importance of being and loving themselves.” width=”281″ height=”400″/>

About the Book Beatrice Zinker, Upside Down Thinker

Beatrice does her best thinking upside down.

Hanging from trees by her knees, doing handstands . . . for Beatrice Zinker, upside down works every time. She was definitely upside down when she and her best friend, Lenny, agreed to wear matching ninja suits on the first day of third grade. But when Beatrice shows up at school dressed in black, Lenny arrives with a cool new outfit and a cool new friend. Even worse, she seems to have forgotten all about the top-secret operation they planned!

Can Beatrice use her topsy-turvy way of thinking to save the mission, mend their friendship, and flip things sunny-side up?

The kiddos and I really loved this book. We found the illustrations fun and they gave Beatrice personality!

Beatrice is eccentric. She definitely marches to her own drummer. She insists on doing things differently and her own way.

I love that in spite of Beatrice’s quirks, the book relays that different is okay and we can all be friends by accepting the differences.

Initially, the book was slow-moving. It seemed to take a few chapters to get to know Beatrice and breakfast seemed more the focus than Beatrice.

Her friendship with Lenny is endearing.

This book also has a strong storyline about family. Her sister is the polar opposite of her. Her dad makes things work, even suggesting they have dessert first when Beatrice has a bad day–and a pineapple upside-down cake no less!

It’s a fun book for family reading, or for middle-school-aged readers.
