Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. It is not because it’s filled with mushy gushy love stuff–let’s face it, I’d leave my husband for Jon Bon Jovi. There will be no romantic candle-light dinner, nor will there be a pouring of affection. The love-o-meter will remain the same at our house.
Nope! I love the creative journey. I enjoy watching my children painstakingly write their names on Valentine Cards and take the time to put thought into what they are giving to someone. I love the celebration of beauty in all things.
Last year we spent hours making special Valentine’s Gifts. A classroom celebration deflated the dreams when an assembly line took place on the exit from the school, where everyone deposited their cards into envelopes. The teacher requested the Valentines not be made out to anyone specific.
This year, the First Grade teacher is going all out. There will be a Valentine’s Day Party, and cardholders are being made. It’s exciting to watch the magic happen for my daughter. I remember in Fourth Grade, my best friend, Jen Lyon, gave me a Valentine that has yet to be topped. Returning home from school, I remember looking through Valentine’s Day cards and reading them. There was a knock on the door, and when I answered, there was no one there…just these hearts that led to our Winder Dairy Milk Delivery cooler. When I opened the cooler, there was the most beautiful Valentine, and surrounding it was candy. It floored me.
I want my children to experience that magic at least once in their life. I want them to give that magic to someone many times in their life.
