I recently received “The 24/7 Baby Doctor” publication, and I must say it is a very inviting read.  Particularly for those new parents who have no idea where to go, what to do, and the famous all-time question, “Isn’t there a manual for this?”.

When I was pregnant, oh so many years ago, I certainly wish author Victoria Rogers McEvoy, MD, would have had this out at that time.  Dr. McEvoy provides wisdom and insight into the new parenting world that is most intelligent and balanced.  Answers are straightforward, easy to comprehend, and make perfect sense.

For example, on page 95, there is a question, “When will I know what hand my baby prefers?”.  Dr. McEvoy doesn’t sidestep the issue or elaborate on wasted evaluations.  Short and precise offerings are made here. She responds to this question with, “Babies rarely show hand preference before six to nine months of age, and preference can vacillate later. Most babies will often hold something with one hand and manipulate it with the other. However, babies tend to prefer turning to the right: if they turn to the left, they may be left-handed. A clear preference doesn’t emerge until age three or four years in many children.”.

I found this to be a refreshing approach to a medical doctor’s way of thinking and responding to new parental concerns.  If you can think of it, Dr. McEvoy can probably answer it. Better yet, YOU will understand what she is saying, too.

“The 24/7 Baby Doctor” book is exactly what the title implies.  It covers every aspect of new parenting from birth to the transition to babies’ first-year happenings. Marriage topics are discussed briefly and to the point. So many topics are covered, and the reader will not be bored by this book. I think all new grandparents should pick it up. I am one, and I found this book to be so informative and really helpful regarding the pending birth of my fourth grandchild this winter.

The holidays are approaching, and if you know anyone in the midst of having a baby or planning on having one anytime soon, this is the perfect baby shower gift.  It covers it all.

Dr. Victoria Rogers McEvoy, MD, is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, a senior pediatrician at Massachusetts General Hospital, and chief of pediatrics of Mass General West Medical Group. She lives with her family in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Florence Isaacs is the author or co-author of nine books and past president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. She lives in New York City.  She worked in conjunction with Dr. McEvoy on this book.
