Blue Tooth and the Salt Lake Grid

I’m Lost Even with Hubby’s Directions!

As a mom I preach to my children not to text while driving. I try and coordinate my phone calls to them in between their errands so as to not catch them driving. I try and lead by example. With the Chevy Traverse and its built in Blue Tooth feature, I’m a shining star at example.

Last week, I was out running errands. My husband called from downtown. It startled me when the call came through. I suppose there were obvious signs, like the radio muted, the air conditioning fans silenced and then “ring, ring, ring” filled the interior. A phone call! It was a piece of cake to answer. I simply pressed the button, built in to the steering wheel and said, “Hello?” I didn’t even have to take my hands off the steering wheel or divert my eyes from the road. I was feeling like a pro!

My husband invited me to join he and my dad downtown at the Blue Iguana for lunch. Right on! I’m always lovin’ the flavor of Mexican! Hubby gave me the directions and then the call disconnected. I love that Blue Tooth tells me the call has ended and then magically the radio resumes and the air condition continues to chill!

It was once the call disconnected that I went into panic mode. I’m a Utah Native. I’ve heard the hype about how our city is built on a grid, making it impossible to get lost. The punchline is just keep turning left and you’ll be right back where you started. Ahem…I would be the exception to this rule. I panic when I have to find my way someplace new.

So I pulled over. I couldn’t remember the exact directions but I knew the Blue Iguana was in the neighborhood of 156 West and North Temple. I entered that into the Chevy Traverse’s GPS Navigation. It determined my route and we were off! I followed the directions the Navigating voice gave me and I was feeling fairly confident.

Then the Navigation Gal announced I had arrived at my destination. Yeah…I obviously didn’t recall the hubby’s directions very well. Technology sometimes wows me beyond recollection! The kiddos were looking around at the buildings and not recognizing anything remotely Blue Iguana-ish.

We pulled into a parking lot and I was frantic. I was NOT going to call and tell the Husband that I had done the impossible–again–and was lost in my hometown. The week of teasing that would follow did not appeal to me.

After a few minutes of silence, I remembered On-Star!

I pressed the button on my rear view mirror and a nice woman answered asking where I needed to go. I told her “The Blue Iguana”. She gave me the address and the next thing I know, a map is being loaded into the navigation system. How awesome is this!?

Turns out The Blue Iguana is located at 156 South West Temple. Thanks to On-Star and a Mommy Bribe to the kiddos not to tell their father, we arrived with no one any wiser to our previous bewilderment!

I’m lovin’ the technology in the Chevy Traverse and how simplified my life is becoming!
