Book Review

It was a successful seven days for the first week of my quest for a leaner, healthier me. Let’s face it, and you’ve read my Week One Wednesday Weigh-In, eating right can be difficult and confusing. I struggle with integrating my healthy choices into my family’s meals because they aren’t dieting.

This week, I received the book Nutrition at Your Fingertips by national nutrition expert Elisa Zied M.S., R.D., C.D.N. I’m learning so much about nutrition. It’s straightforward and written on the inexperienced level, like me.

I’ve owned many books on health and nutrition. I’ve lost interest. I’ve found them complicated. I’ve given up. These factors don’t apply with Nutrition at Your Fingertips. From the front cover, I knew it was me. An immediate index at my fingertips makes it easy to read about a topic without any effort. On my kitchen counter, I used it to learn about fiber–it fills my belly so it won’t rumble. I learned about the different types of fiber. I had immediate access to the foods in my kitchen jam-packed with fiber.

I’m taking a multi-vitamin, so I read about Dietary Supplements. It was so easy to understand. It helped me determine my needs and what minerals I needed. Nutrition at Your Fingertips talks about Deficiencies and Excesses, what the mineral does, and more. It was fascinating.

There is a chapter on the functions of fat. Hmmm…it has a purpose besides gathering at my waist. This chapter talks about the Functions of Fats. The differences between Monosaturated Fats, Polyunsaturated Fats, Saturated Fats, Trans Fats. It gives light to Dietary Cholesterol and Daily Fat and Cholesterol Recommendations. The best part, when I forget something or have a question, it’s right there, easy to access without searching through a directory or index.

Nutrition at Your Fingertips is an easily accessible guide that teaches you:
  • How to eat and beat diseases that may be preventable
  • The functions of vitamins and minerals and where to get them
  • The symptoms of a food allergy, intolerance, and sensitivity
  • How to burn more calories in less time
  • How consuming more fiber can slim your waistline and how to get more of it
  • Where all those extra calories in your diet lurk
  • Whether you’re eating a portion or a serving
  • How consuming superfoods can increase weight loss
  • How to indulge without going overboard
  • How to balance your food and fitness choices to manage or lose weight.
